Day 2 – Smooth Sailing to Girona

Today started with a 7am jetlagged wake up after a nice (though warm) sleep in a real bed. We had a quick coffee with Xavi, said our goodbyes and set off towards Girona.

The route took us through rather dilapidated jungly lands for the first 30km or so. We were surprised at how lush and green the landscape is, with our expectations being that Spain was all arid. At 30km we had morning chocolate croissants and coffee (and couldn’t spend any time looking at our phones because we’re still without a sim card).

The road was then smooth sailing for the next 40km to lunch. The pavement was smooth, light wind at our backs, with a gentle downhill. Many 5km laps we averaged 25-27km/h. Drivers were much more patient and friendly than we expected, where cars/lorries would wait behind us for a while until a safe passing area came up, and then gave us a wide berth.

Lunch was around 77km, where we had the sandwiches we made and packed from the lounge along with some ice cream and beer we ordered from a restaurant.

An hour or so later we arrived in Girona. First stop – decathlon! Fortunately they had threaded gas canisters, so we bought 2 small ones, plus a pair of bike shorts for Viki. Next we got a sim card from Vodafone. Finally, we headed to the house of our warmshowers host Marc, along with his wife Cecilia and two sons Aran and Biel.

We chatted for a while, played with the kids, and had a wonderful dinner that they made of hamburgers and salad. Now camped out in their yard and ready for a nice sleep.

Note that we need to figure out this error with google photos authentication. See the photos on strava for the time being.
