We had a terrific night’s sleep last night. We were asleep from around 10pm to 7am, without any disturbances.
The day started out wet, cold, and with some tough climbs. The first was around 150m, the second around 350m. Barely 15km into the day we were pooped!
We had breakfast in a lidl parking lot – muesli with milk along with coffee. It was then smooth sailing to Basel, which was cool to see, where we had lunch.
We’ve decided to deviate from EuroVelo 5 by going up the German, rather than French, side of the Rhine. This would give us a couple days to experience what biking in Germany is like. We followed a route through Strava heat maps that turned out quite well.
We stopped after 15km or so at a restaurant to try German food. We had schnitzel and gulash – both massive portions, not quite as refined as the Italian and French meals we’ve had, but nice and homely.
We then had to find a campsite in the dark, which wasn’t much fun. We’re now off the side of the road, about 90km from Strasbourg, which we’ll reach tomorrow.

I spotted schnitzel
I spotted schnitzel. Yum!
