Day 1 – First day on the bikes!

Our last post was written during our layover in Stockholm. It was a bit frantic, trying to figure out how to connect the Flickr photos and how to update our location using FTP on our tablet, but we managed to submit right from our seats on the plane.

We arrived in Tromso and my pannier was the first bag off. It took 10 minutes of us nervously waiting before Viki’s pannier arrived. We were exceedingly worried about the bikes being mishandled. We had seen the baggage handlers load them onto both our first and second flights without much care. Fortunately both bikes made it safe and sound. A few zip ties broke, my brakes tore through the plastic bag, but no major damage! We were delighted. I was pessimistically sure that something would be broken.

Without much further ado we reassembled and loaded up the bikes. We quickly filled up our stove fuel from a petrol station at the airport, finally leaving at 3:30pm. We planned to bike 50km on our first day, which happened to bring us just to the Senja ferry terminal. The ride started out beautifully, 25 degrees and sunny, with stunning scenery. The road meandered along the coast, with mountains coming right out from the sea.

Minutes after we arrived in Senja it started to rain fairly hard. We quickly got into our rain gear and found that our only option to cook dinner was to do so under cover of the portable toilet. We had cheese and broccoli pasta with chorizo and finished just in time to get the final sailing, at 8:47pm, to Botnhamn.

We’ve just had a shower in the ferry bathrooms and are now writing this up in the tent in a park. Good night!
