Day 2 – Bike through Senja

We woke up to our beautiful campsite this morning at 7:45am. Packing up camp is always rather time consuming, so by the time we had breakfasted and loaded the bikes it was 10:30am.

It was 40km to Skaland, where we stopped for lunch and tried cooking eggs over the stove. They weren’t particularly easy to cook without oil, over a one-temperature camp stove, but they worked out in the end. Look for us by the 1.7km junction to Skaland on Google Street View – the GSV car passed us!

We continued the cycle through a grand total of 7 tunnels over the next 40km, the longest reaching 2.1km. These are pretty bleak places on a bike, some of them including steep hills, with poor lighting. When cars pass, they sound like they’re going 10^6km/hr, when in reality we’ve always been given loads of room.

At around 5pm, we made it to Gryllefjord, with the next ferry to Andenes leaving at 7pm. Pro tip – get the Troms Mobilit app to save 30% on ferry tickets! With some time to kill, we explored the grocery store (and saw reindeer and whale sausages!) and cooked couscous with eggs and cheese for dinner.

  1. Looks like the two of you have a great setup. Good to see you’ve graduated to a big boys bike Andrew! πŸ™‚ The plastic bags are a great idea for transport. I’ve generally found that baggage handlers are more careful when they can see the fragility of what they’re handling. Nice blog!

  2. Looks absolutely incredible guys! Few laughs in the office on seeing the picture of you cooking your dinner in a toilet πŸ˜€
