If the power indicator light is not on, locate the power button on the middle right side of the frront of the computer, and press it. It is recessed when on. If nothing happens press the switch on the power bar instead.If the power indicator light on the monitor is off then press the button on the right front side of the monitor or check the power bar. A yellow flashing power indicator light indicates that it is in Power Suspend mode. If the computer is on and this light is flashing, moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard will reactivate it. The speakers also have their own power button on the front of one of the 2 speakers. Wait for Windows 95 to start. A logon dialog will be displayed once the start sequence is finished.
Type your User name and Password. Passwords are case sensitive. In the Domain Name field type Mulgrave. This will normally already be filled in. If this is the first time you are logging on at a particular computer you will be asked to confirm the password in which case you have to enter it a second time.
A logon script is then executed which connects you to your home folder and sets up your mail settings. It is recommended that the first time you logon you change your assigned password to something that it known only by you.
Press Start, Settings, and Control Panel. Double click the Password icon and the Password Properties dialog is displayed. Click the Change Passwords button. A dialog will be displayed asking whether you would like to change your Microsoft Networking password as well. Make sure this is checked. The Change Password dialog is displayed prompting you for your old and new password. You need to confirm the new password by entering it a second time. Press OK and a message will be displayed stating that your password was changed successfully.
It is important that you log off before leaving your computer.This ensures that the next person who uses the computer does not have access to your files.
To log off, select Shutdown from the Start Menu. Then click the Close all programs and log on as a different user option and press the Yes butto. All running programs will be closed and the logon dialog will appear waiting for the next user to log back on.
The PCs have been set up so that the monitors will go into Power Save mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. It is not necessary to power down the computers or the monitors.
Once the logon process has completed the H: drive will be connected to your home folder. This is located on the server and is private to each user. It is where personal documents and files should be stored. Regardless of which computer you log on at, you will always be connected to the same folder.
The CD Roms on all the PCs have been shared. This means that if you know that the CD you would like to have access to is in the CD Rom drive of a given computer you can connect to it via Explorer. Start Explorer. Click on Network Neighbourhood. Then Click on the name of the computer where the CD Rom is located. The CDs share name is CDRom. Click on this and you will see its contents. If there is a program you would like to start then double click the program. Many CDs require you to run a program called Setup before they can be accessed.
To access the mail program start Netscape and click on the Window menu and select Netscpe Mail. This will display the main frame window displayed here.
To create a mail message click on the To:Mail button or click on the File menu and select New Mail Message. The Message Composition dialog will be displayed.
To print the currently selected message press File Print.
Press the Get Mail button to pick up any new messages that have been sent to you. These will be placed in the Inbox. You can create additional folders by clicking on File and selecting New Folder. You will be prompted for the name of the Folder. Once it has been created you can drag mail messages from other folders such as the Inbox into the new one. Folders provide a mechanism of categorizing your messages.
Mail Folders are stored on the server so you will see your messages regardless of which computer you log on from. This will work interchangeably between Macs and PCs.

Start Netscape. This will start on the Mulgrave home page. At the moment the school is not directly connected to the internet so this is the only thing that can be accessed from inside the school. This contains the latest news, information, and articles from Mulgrave School. The URL is http://www.mulgrave.com from inside the school. This site is also replicated on the internet and can be accessed at http://www.trainingnet.com/mulgrave if you have a computer at home which is connected to the internet.
