Getting Started With The Mulgrave Network from a Macintosh

Power On

If the power indicator light is not on, locate the power button on the back right side of the computer. Turn it on. If nothing happens press the switch on the power bar instead.If the power indicator light on the monitor is off then press the button on the right front side of the monitor or check the power bar.

Using Network Resources

There is no log on process on the Macintosh so you must connect to network resources as outlined in this section.

Start Chooser. Click the AppleShare icon. The network server (Bacon) will be displayed as well as any Macintosh computers that are on. Click on Bacon. Enter your username and password. This will display the available shared resources. They are:

Once you have successfully connected to a network resource its drive icon will be visible on the desktop.

Make sure to drag any network resources you have connected to into the trash can beefore leaving the computer. This disconnects the computer from them. If you do not do this, others will have access to your files.

Home Folder

Once connected to the Users resource, you can access your personal documents and files by clicking on the Users icon and then clicking on the folder which matches your user name. You can only access your own home folder.

Sending and Retrieving Mail

Before accessing mail you must have connected to the Users share as outlined above in the Using Network Resources section.

To access the mail program start Netscape and click on the Window menu and select Netscpe Mail. This will display the main frame window displayed here.

Mail Frame

There is no log on process on the Macintosh so you must set your mail and news preferences prior to using mail. Select Mail and News Preferences from the Options menu. Then click the Servers tab. The following is displayed:

Server Preferences

Set the Outgoing Mail Server and Incoming Mail Server entries to mulgrave.com if they are not already set. Place your username in the POP user ID field. Click the Browse button and select your mail directory. This will be on Users:<userid>:Mail where <userid> is your logon user id. Then click on the Identity tab.

Identity Preferences

Enter your name into the Your Name field and your email address into the Your Email field. This will have the form <userid>@mulgrave.com where <userid> is your logon user id.

You are now ready to send and receive mail.

To create a mail message click on the To:Mail button or click on the File menu and select New Mail Message. The Message Composition dialog will be displayed.

To print the currently selected message press File Print.

Press the Get Mail button to pick up any new messages that have been sent to you. These will be placed in the Inbox. You can create additional folders by clicking on File and selecting New Folder. You will be prompted for the name of the Folder. Once it has been created you can drag mail messages from other folders such as the Inbox into the new one. Folders provide a mechanism of categorizing your messages.

Mail Folders are stored on the server so you will see your messages regardless of which computer you log on from. This will work interchangeably between Macs and PCs.

Mail DialogClick the Mail To button to display a list of the users and groups to which you can send mail. Select the name of the person or group to which you wish to send the message and Press OK. The groups are located at the bottom of the list. There are groups for each grade as well as Faculty, Staff, Students, and Parents.Enter the subject for the message and the message body. You may attach one or more documents or files to the message by pressing the Attachment button. Press the Send button to mail the message.
Address BookPress the To button to have the Address placed in the To field. Press the CC (Carbon Copy) button to have the Address placed in the CC field or press the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) button to have the message copied to someone without the other recipients names being transmitted.

Browsing The Net

Start Netscape. This will start on the Mulgrave home page. At the moment the school is not directly connected to the internet so this is the only thing that can be accessed from inside the school. This contains the latest news, information, and articles from Mulgrave School. The URL is http://www.mulgrave.com from inside the school. This site is also replicated on the internet and can be accessed at http://www.trainingnet.com/mulgrave if you have a computer at home which is connected to the internet.
