back to technology committee minutesAttendance was light at this month's meeting due in large part to winter ailments. We decided to go ahead with it anyways. A decision was made to hold the meetings on a monthly basis on a regular day of the month so that it would be easy for members to schedule. The current plan is to hold the meetings on the last Thursday of each month unless this turns out to be unsuitable. The next meeting is therefore scheduled for Thursday February 27.
I'd like to announce a new addition to the committee, Amar Dhaliwal, who is a new Kindergarten parent. He is in the internet database publishing business.
There was considerable discussion about school connectivity. Amar volunteered to register a domain name for the school and to temporarily host the school's external internet site until the school gets its own internet connection. This site will be a duplicate of what is hosted at the school. We'll anounce the domain name once it has been received. We're trying for mulgrave.com, mulgrave.edu, or mulgrave.bc.ca. I have confirmed that the name mulgrave.com is not yet registered with the internic so there is a good chance that we'll be able to reserve it. Until the domain name has been received the URL to the school's site is
Geoff mentioned that the PR committee would want to provide content to the site, especially information regarding the school's mission and image.
I volunteered to provide an extenal post office so that requests for information could be forwarded to the school. This is typically to a general mail address of the form:
info@mulgrave.com
This will be in place once the school's official domain name has been received.
The inaugural staff technology training seminar will be held on Thursday, February 6 in the library. This will cover such topics as logging onto the network, sending email, browsing the intranet, printing, software installation, classroom computer configuration, and security.
Sharon mentioned that a dial-up line was on order so that there could be limited remote access to the school's network from staff, students, and parents. This will also facilitate keeping the schools internal web site in sync with the external one. Once the line is in place the school's network can be accessed by any PPP client with a valid username and password.
She also mentioned that the Communication Tools for Schools CD was on order. Thanks to Jim Robertson for bringing this special offer to our attention at the last board meeting.
The school's library system which is currently single user is scheduled for a multi-user upgrade during the second week of February. This will make it possible to do bibliography searches and put books on hold from any computer in the school or dialed in.
Geoff suggested that the committee should consider other uses for computers in the school and gave an example of connecting them to musical instruments via midi to aid in composition, playback, and reading music. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has suggestions for new potential uses of computers in the scjhool.
Jim Neill dropped off information about a Richmond based company that offers computer consulting and training programs to schools
