Dear Parents

On Wednesday, the finals of our internal Canadian Geography Challenge was held at lunchtime. The competitors (Aadam Tejpar, Graydon Tullis, Kalim Kassam, Nicholas Miller and Aaron Bolus (G.4) together with Charlsey Anthony, Vikas Bowry, Nabila Pirani, Joel Thompson, and Kevan Ward (G.5) answered some incredibly difficult questions, cheered on by an enthusiastic and attentive audience. This year our champion is Nabila Pirani (G.5) our runner-up Joel Thompson (G.5), and tied for third place were Kalim Kassam and Kevan Ward. Well done, all pour learned competitors, and a special thank you to Mr. Motivator, Jamie Wyse (G.4) as well as Alexandra Chan, Farah Kassam, Denise Pao, Aliya Bhatia, Elyssia Patterson, Alyssa Houghton (G.5)

OLIVER PHOTOGRAPHS

Due to the golf tournament, the deadline for ordering Oliver photographs has been extended to Monday, June 15 no later than 4:00 p.m.

CASINO NIGHT

Robertson), goes a huge vote of thanks. I gather that the changes in the Gaming Act which have extended the hours of the casinos as well as raising the bet level should create larger pools of funds for charitable organisations like ours.

WELCOME BACK BARBECUE

This will be held on Sunday, September 14 on the Tiki deck at the North Shore Winter Club. We have now received a menu from the North Shore Winter Club which is attached to this newsletter. We hope that all Mulgrave families, new and returning, will be able to attend this first social event of the new school year. Please complete and return to Mrs. Grant by the last day of school, June 20.

GOSSIP

Our children are taught the virtues of tolerance, compassion, fairness and kindness; gossip has none of these attributes and I would be surprised indeed if any of our students would consider engaging in such an activity. If anyone has any questions about the daily operations, the philosophy or the vision of the school, I would be very glad to answer directly, honestly and personally.

NO FEAR! FRIDAY THE 13th IS ALMOST HERE!

______________________________________________

Tomorrow promises clear skies, cloudy periods and a high of 22 degrees! Sounds perfect for an afternoon at Seymour Golf & Country Club for Mulgrave’s first ever golf event! A total of 48 golfers will hit the links, teeing off from 12 noon to 1:28 p.m. As promised, this will be a "celebrity" event; Peter Karrie, the Phantom of the Opera, and Jackson Davies will play as a 5th in the parties whose bids are successful! Bid sheets were posted in the school foyer Wednesday June 11th; bids close at 4:00 p.m., Thursday June 12th. The successful bidders will be notified by telephone. A list of foursomes was sent home Wednesday - hopefully everyone is now aware of tee-times. If this important information did not reach you, please telephone Lily Bolus at 929-4609.

Between 15 and 18 lucky people will learn about golf from Seymour’s good-natured Pros! The Clinic, remember, begins at 2:00 p.m..

Mrs. Hamer will be greeting and directing people to their appropriate locations on arrival. Be there early to collect your "goodies" from Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. Ferguson at the registration table!

The Barbecue will now host 100 people! That’s 13 very lucky tables for dinner. See what awaits you...

See you there!

Lily Bolus and the entire golf committee.

ORDER YOUR COPY OF THE MULGRAVE WEB SITE

SOCCER CLUB

Just a reminder that the soccer club for K, 1 & 2 has now concluded for the year, and there will be no soccer on Monday, June 16. Ms. Rees & Mr. Fischer would Mr. Chiavatari, Mr. Forzley andTomoko Yoshida for their time and effort.

PARENTS vs TEACHERS REPORT

The Teachers team needed their final bats to overcome the very talented Parents softball squad. The final score was in fact 13-12. The game was not without drama with Ms. Tuck’s quick reflexes saving her face and Rick Bryant’s left knee was defeated not by the parents but by the turn on 3rd base. Long hits were smashed to fielders and cars alike á la Mr. Oliver, Ms. Rees, and Dr. Spooner. Special thanks to Mr. Schramm, Mr. Staff for organising the parents team, Mrs. Oliver, scorer and Dr. Spooner, Head of Refreshments. We hope this will be an annual event. Do I hear a rumblings of interest to organise next year’s date?

Ms. Rees, Ms. Millers, Mr. Fischer and myself attended an evening lecture organised by the Gifted Children Association, an organisation to which Mulgrave belongs.

In the summer months, Ms. Straub & Ms. Millerd are taking the Orton Gillingham Reading Course, Mr. Fischer is continuing his Masters degree studies, Mrs. Tetiker is extending her knowledge of Maths and Biology and Mr. McLean will be attending a Music Educator Course; in the Fall, Mrs. Ferguson, who is presently pursuing studies in Canadian History and Literature, will be attending a Reading Workshop given by David Booth, the Editor of one of our basal reading schemes, "Impressions".

Teachers are indeed life-long learners!

TEACHING STAFF FOR 1997/98

We say good-bye this term to Mrs. Bryant, who will be teaching a Kindergarten class at Collingwood next year, and to Ms. Tuck, who is joining Southridge School to teach French and Music. She and her husband will be very much an instructional team, since they are both joining the faculty at Southridge. Ms. Rees is leaving Mulgrave to take up a position at West Point Grey Academy which includes coaching, one of her passions in life, and indeed in teaching. We wish them all great good wishes in their new schools, which are sister schools (fellow members of the Federation of Independent Schools Association.)

Kindergarten - Mrs. Lynne Shozawa will be joining us to teach one of our two Kindergarten classes. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Mrs. Shozawa presently teaches at the Vancouver Christian School. Immediately prior to this, Mrs. Shozawa taught for thirteen years at the Schools of the Sacred Heart, an international independent school in San Francisco. She comes to us with outstanding references which attest to her exceptional teaching abilities, warmth, humour and love of teaching.

Kindergarten - Ms. Susan Seier will be teaching our second Kindergarten class. She is a graduate of Queen’s University, Ontario, co-incidentally attending some classes with Mr. Fischer! She taught in a co-ed independent boarding school in England before joining Somerville Manor Private School in Mississauga, Ontario where she taught Kindergarten and Grade 2. Since she has been in Canada, Mrs. Jolley has been working as a substitute teacher within the independent school system as well as in the public schools, so that she has an excellent understanding of the curriculum.

MULGRAVE SUMMER CONCERT

Our concern begins at 7:00 p.m.. The children will have spent the afternoon at the Centennial Theatre, from where they should be picked up at 3:30 p.m.

Every child in the school will be performing, and attendance is mandatory. The children should wear their #1 uniform; which is the winter uniform, and be in their seats by 6:30 p.m.

Our guest speaker will be Dr. James Boutilier, who is Special Advisor (Policy) at the Maritime Forces Pacific Headquarters, and a staunch advocate for the Royal Roads University.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

The first Mulgrave Golf Tournament is about to tee off and I know that I am looking forward to an enjoyable (if perhaps frustrating!) afternoon and a pleasant evening at Seymour Golf and Country Club. I hope to see you there - if you are reading this at home on Friday evening, come to Seymour and join us!

The past several months have passed very quickly and we are now approaching the end of this school year with our Summer Concert and Awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 18 at Centennial Theatre. We are also approaching the end of our financial year on June 30. Several weeks ago, an opportunity for parents to assist the school by donating their building fund deposit was introduced. The donations help the school strengthen our Balance Sheet and tax deductible receipts will be issued to all donors.

So far, about twenty families have agreed to make this donation and Mulgrave thanks them very much. If you have been thinking about making the donation but have not yet done so, I strongly urge you to help us improve the school’s year end financial position. A Donation Form is attached and may be returned to Mrs. Grant at the school. Thank you in advance!

We are now forming a new Building Committee, in anticipation of acquiring a site in the near future. The Building Committee will be co-chaired by Mr. Wayne Smithies (Warren, G.2) and Mr. Tony Allard (Gage -K.). If you are interested in participating in this committee and have relevant professional skills, such as Architecture, Civil or Structural Engineering, please call Mr. Smithies at 985-4458 or Mr. Allard at 922-0926.

On Monday, June 16, several of the Board and Committee Members will be making a presentation about our plans for the coming year at the North Shore Winter Club. Please join us at 7:30 p.m. in the Jim Graham Lounge.

Finally, I would like to thank all the parents and friends who so generously donated their time to volunteer to staff the three charity casino nights. It was very kind of you. We will not know how much money was raised for the school until sometime during July, but with any luck the funds will be significant. Thank you all again!

Jim Robertson (Andrew, Christopher, G.3)

Have a great weekend
