Dear Parents
I had a visit this week from Ron Rogers, Area Manager of B.C. Hydro who expressed grave concerns regarding the driving/parking behaviour of parents before and after school. He has thus far refrained from calling in the ticketing authorities, and has asked the school, once again to remind you of the very real danger to your children when double or illegally parking.
Please remember that there is ample parking available to us at the North Shore Winter Club for drop off and pick up periods.
SUMMER CONCERT
Our Summer Concert and Awards Presentation will be held on Wednesday, June 18th at 7.00 p.m. in the Centennial Theatre, North Vancouver. Tickets will be on sale at the school from June 11, 1997. Prices are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students (other than our own) and seniors. Mrs. Grant will not be able to exchange or refund tickets as this takes an inordinately long amount of administrative time in our always tremendously busy days.
The faculty and staff have dedicated many hours discussing the philosophy of awards as it appertains to the values and ethos of Mulgrave, and believe that the virtues encapsulated within the following acronym are genuine reflections of our school.
M Manners
U Uniqueness
L Love of Learning
G Generous of Spirit
R Respect
A Attitude
V Verve
E Excellence
It is considered that Kindergarten children should not be included in the formal award presentation, since they might find the concept of prize giving somewhat more difficult to grasp than their fellow students. We believe that every child at Mulgrave can aspire to these awards, innate talent notwithstanding. Each classroom teacher, having consulted with their colleagues, may award up to four Mulgrave awards which are accolades for children who consistently, persistently and with grace, throughout the school year have striven daily to emulate and live the name the values of Mulgrave.
As well, every classroom teacher from Grade 1 and up may award a Most Improved Award to the child in that Grade who efforts in all areas of school life have consistently demonstrated significant levels of improvement.
Each and every student in the school will be presented with individual awards during the day time of June 18. No one will be excluded.
The other awards are the trophies, most of which have been presented for specific qualities by parents. All members of staff are involved in the selection of the recipients, for as a team we are all conversant and familiar with every child in the school. Awards this year to be presented are:
The George Woods Plate for Spirit and Enthusiasm
The Violet Witty Memorial Award for Perseverance
The Everett Larose Award for the student who most exemplifies a positive attitude towards self, fellow students and faculty.
The Koenig Family Award for Fine Arts and Performance.
The Fine Arts (Visual) Cup
The Athletic Cup for Boys
The Athletic Cup for Girls
Chairmans Cup is annually awarded in recognition of a student who exemplifies the combines attitudes of Citizenship, Academics, the Arts and Athletics.
All G.1-G.5 children in the school are considered for the awards, and at morning assembly I have discussed with them what is written on these pages as well as, at the same time, answering any questions which the children might have. In addition, classroom teachers have explained the Mulgrave and major awards.
OLIVER SETS
Thanks to Mrs. Botwright (James, G.3) who has squeezed us some space in her warehouse so that we may store our valuable sets, at no cost to the school, and to Mr. Ayers who hitched up the trailer yet again to transport goods and chattels.
JAPANESE INTERN
Tomoko is not leaving us until next October, but wheels have been set in motion for our next Japanese teacher, who is due to arrive in Vancouver on October 25. She will therefore, be with us for almost a complete school year, and I am very grateful indeed to the International Internship Programmes Organisation who provide Mulgrave with excellent teachers.
Two families have been host families; the Molthagens and Natasha (G.3) adopted Junko, whilst the Todds and Alexandra (G.2) are presently family to Tomoko. Our new intern is also named Junko, and we hope that another Mulgrave family will take Ms. Masuda into their home.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested. I have Junkos photograph, and a great deal of information about her, as well as the programme details to share.
WELCOME BACK BARBECUE
This will be held on Sunday, September 14 on the Tiki deck at the North Shore Winter Club. Details of menus and costs will be published very shortly. I shall be organising a buddy system between new parents and (young") old parents again this year since I want our sense of welcome and community to grow and flourish exponentially. If you would like to be a buddy family, please let me know
GOLF TOURNAMENT, CLINIC, DINNER & DANCING!
FRIDAY THE 13TH IS FAST APPROACHING!
Only one week to go! Invitations were sent home on Monday June 2nd. If you have not yet replied, please do so ASAP as we need to know our numbers today!
The tournament is close to its full complement of 60, thanks to all the enthusiastic golfers at Mulgrave! The clinic, on the other hand, has a meagre 10 people committed, including Mrs. Tetiker! If the response remains low, we may have to cancel this part of the days events. I am still hopeful that more of us will realise what a great opportunity this is. Rather than learn to golf from a book or from your spouse at the driving range, you can learn from CPGA certified instructors in a friendly environment. Remember, golf clubs and refreshments are included in the 3 hour clinic, as well as a limited-edition MULGRAVE-PICTET golf shirt!
DINNER & DANCE:
The Seymour Golf & Country Club is a wonderful venue to wind down the school year and celebrate all that we have accomplished in so short a time! Please join us for a barbecue on the terrace at 7:00 p.m. - and bring your dancing shoes! Casual dress, please!
PARENTS FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE REPORT
At the Fundraising Committee meeting on June 3, congratulations were given to everybody involved with Spring Gala which was a very successful event. The Golf Tournament on June 13 is the next activity with tickets still available for the Golf Clinic and the barbecue dinner. The school will also be a beneficiary from three casino sessions on June 8, 9 and 10 at the Renaissance Hotel.
Fall Fair is scheduled for November 8 and the committee is looking for volunteers to co-chair the fair. (If you are interested, please contact Anne Wallis at 986 3649 or Joan Grant at the school). The concept of a Resource Directory for listings of services available to parents was also discussed and will be followed up further. A proposal for the older school children to run a car wash met general approval and will probably be an activity for September.
A summary of funds raised to date was given, and it was noted that the original target for the year was 150,000. So far $134,000 has been raised - $16,500 from donations (excluding Building Fund donations), $9,500 from September Casino night, $9,500 from Fall Fair, $3,500 from East Meets West and $95,000 from Spring Gala. With the funds to be raised from the upcoming activities, it seems there will be an excellent possibility of meeting and exceeding the target.
Finally, the committee welcomed Anne Wallis as the new Chairperson and Yvette Stachowiak as the new Secretary for the Fundraising Committee.
CANADIAN GEOGRAPHY CHALLENGE
Next Wednesday, June 11, Aadam Tejpar, Graydon Tullis, Kalim Kassam, Nicholas Miller and Aaron Bolus (G.4) together with Charlsey Anthony, Vikas Bowry, Nabila Pirani, Joel Thompson, and Kevan Ward (G.5) will compete in a lunch time Canadian Geography Challenge. Next year, when we have a G.6 class, we can formally enter the nation-wide competition.
BIRD TALKS
On June 6, children in K, 2 and 3 enjoyed listening to Catherine Young who is the Education Co-ordinator for the Wild Bird Centre in Burnaby and Langley. She hosts a variety of educational programmes for schools, clubs and organizations on backyard birding. These include slide presentations and talks, Birthday Birdwalks for children and Continuing Education classes.
An avid birder for the past 25 years, she has extensive knowledge about feeding and observing wildbirds.
AINISLE MANSON
On Wednesday, June 11, the whole school will have the pleasure of listening to Mrs. Manson, who is a well-known local writer for children.
CASINO NIGHT
Thank you so much to all the Casino volunteers who expeditiously agreed to work at the Casino sessions, Mr. Visram (Kashif, G.1, Salim, K), Mr. Wierenga (Jaclyn, G.2, Lauren, K.), Mr. Clarke (Jason, G.2), Mr. Peet (Ashley, K.), Mr. Ayers (Brandon, G.2), Mr. Chiavattari (Michael, G.1), Mr./Mrs. Reed (Gabrielle, G.2), Mr. Smyth (Hilary, G.2).
