Dear Parents

On Friday, May 23, we venture into the genre of musical theatre, with our production of Oliver! Mulgrave is blessed by the presence of incredibly talented, and very hard-working, students, parents and the best of teachers. Oliver! is a very ambitious presentation to mount, more especially when working with elementary aged children. The actors, who are G1-G.5 students, have enormous self confidence, have displayed self discipline, and very importantly, have greatly enjoyed the challenge presented to them. Learning lines in an alien accent, following the precise and complicated choral movements devised by our outstanding musical director, Mr. McLean, whilst at the same time singing in character as orphans, pick-pockets or clients of the "Three Cripples" pub is extra- ordinarily demanding.

Every child in Mulgrave has been involved in the production in some way or another; the Kindergarten class created cards of wool for the street sellers; the Grade 1 class made fish almost good enough to eat, whilst the other classes became knee deep in luscious strawberries, fat, frilly cabbages and languorous red roses. Our thanks go to Mrs. Murphy (Sean, G.1) and her friend Phil Periera for their combined creative support given to our artful, artistic director (and designer of our programme cover) Mrs. Ferguson.

As for Mrs. Botwright ..... perhaps the T.V. studios just around the corner might be interested in this burgeoning talent! The children have been literally transformed by Mrs. Botwright and her helpers (Mrs. Neill (Fiona, G.2), Mrs. Turner (Glen,K, Marion G.3)

Ms. Straub and Ms. McDonald (Aurora Buchanan,G.5) have spun magic in the choreography for the "Who Will Buy" dance sequence.

Dr. Bumble (who is really Lutetia Wallis Mayer’s [G.1] Dad) and Bill Sykes (Alexandra Wheelwright’s [G.1] Dad) will no doubt cause you to hiss and boo, whilst Ms. Rees’ husband, Spencer Robinson, I think will cajole and charm you as Fagin, despite his crooked ways!

As well as studying lines, notes and movements the children have learned a great deal of historical material regarding the Victorian Era, the Industrial Revolution and the lives of long ago children. Our Aesthetic and Arts strand is much interwoven with the other three; dance is a component of P.E., history, sociology and literature are academic subjects and the study of other times and lives, values and attitudes, belong as does the tolerant, hard-working and persevering behaviour displayed by our cast and crew of children in Oliver! to the Citizenship strand.

We have encroached very little on curricular time; the two days which we will spend at the Theatre are in themselves a learning experience, wherein the total brew becomes stewed, and ready to serve. At Mulgrave, we benefit from nine more teaching school days, than other schools, so that no mandated minutes are lost, whatsoever.

I have tremendous faith in all our Mulgrave endeavors; I hope you enjoy Oliver! as much as I know I will.

LOST PROPERTIES!

A significant number of students seem to be mis-placing items of clothing. If everything is named, it should be easy to track down; please, however, will you empty out back-packs and P.E. bags, since, mysteriously lost articles tend to re-appear in these capacious carriers.
