Dear Parents
Next Wednesday, May 7, members of the Mulgrave Track and Field team will travel to Victoria with two of their coaches, Ms. Straub and Ms. Rees (Mrs. Tetiker is also a coach) to compete against Independent School teams from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. The Mulgrave Track 'Knights' are: Ashley Taunton, Kiki Dimakis, Tyler Solloway, Aadam Tejpar, Aaron Bolus, Nick Miller, Jamie Wyse and Ryan Vaisler (Grade 4). Grade 5 representatives are: Elyssia Patterson, Alyssa Houghton, Fiona Rayher, Nabila Pirani, Vikas Bowry, Shane Lalji, Michael Roethe, and Kevan Ward.
The team will be involved in seven events at the University of Victoria Stadium, and we wish them a happy day. As always, I am confident that the students will give of their best, and one cannot ask for more. Several Grade 3 students were also committed runners during the track programme; next year they too will be eligible to participate in the meet. The coaches have appreciated the energy and enthusiasm of these G.3 students as well as that of the sterling Mulgrave Team members.
Mulgrave has a four stranded curriculum and we try very hard to maintain equilibrium between Academics, Sports, Citizenship and Athletics.
This week Grade 4 and 5 students (as well as some Grade 2 and 3 students who were lucky enough to have their names pulled randomly out of a hat for the extra tickets) were very fortunate indeed to listen to, and meet with, a true citizen of the world, Dr. Jane Goodall. Her presentation clearly inspired the students; perhaps next year we can become members of her 'Roots and Shoots' club, which involves its members in important environmental issues.
Dr. Goodall likened the problems of the world to a brick wall. The children of the world represent the 'shoots' which, if sprouting from strong roots, can push through the bricks. Over 30 countries around the world are now involved in 'Roots and Shoots', with the strongest interest being in North America. Perhaps all the 'shoots' can make the brick wall crumble.
Today was a very exciting day for some of the students at Mulgrave School. We went to listen to Dr. Jane Goodall who was speaking to young people at the Italian Cultural Institute. We learned a lot; for instance how the chimpanzees use a blade of grass or a twig to haul twenty termites out of a hole. This is now Dr. Goodall's 37th year of studying chimpanzees and now she goes around the world informing people about the chimpanzees and what we can do to help their species.
People have been cutting down forests and killing chimpanzee mothers to get their babies to sell. So there is a fear that the chimpanzee species might become extinct.
Dr. Goodall is trying to collect money to help her in her job to save the chimpanzees and to allow people to study them.
Aadam Tejpar, Grade 4.

THE TRAILER!
The trailer which is parked outside the school contains 'Oliver' scenery which we were lucky enough to obtain from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, who themselves recently produced 'Oliver'. Mr. Ayers (Brandon, G.2) generously made available a tractor and a driver so that the precious cargo could be hauled away from the Centennial theatre to our own venue. In that vein, if any powerful parents would like to lend a hand in the unloading and positioning of the set on the morning of Thursday, May 22 (we have the theatre from 9:00 a.m.) and similarly in the striking of the set after our performance on Friday, May 23, we would welcome you with open arms! If you can help, please give Mrs. Grant the nod or the word, and I will contact you.
TICKETS FOR 'OLIVER'
These will be on sale at the school on Monday, May 11. Prices are $13.00 for adults, and $11.00 for students and seniors. The theatre has 718 seats and we hope to fill every one of them!
EARLY BIRD TICKETS
You will be able to bid for two blocks of six 'prime' seats at next Friday's Gala Dinner, as well as my much coveted parking spot!
OLIVER SCHEDULE
This has been given to all cast and crew members today, together with information regarding our all day rehearsal on Monday, May 19. This is actually a public holiday - we, however, as previously intimated, will be working. Please note that the rehearsal next Friday, May 9 will end at 4:30 p.m. so that you may all be relaxed and ready for the Gala Dinner that evening. School will be closed after 4:30 p.m., so that we too may be prepared for an evening to which I think we all look forward to with great anticipation.
CARLTON PERFORMANCE
Cast members of 'Oliver' will next Friday morning, May 9th sing and perform for residents of the tower block adjacent to the North Shore Winter Club. This presentation is only for this select audience. The Carlton is only a stone's throw from the school; nonetheless, we require permission slips for our performers, and I would be grateful is you could complete and return them by Tuesday, May 6.
EARL OF MULGRAVE
Viscount Normanby this week wrote expressing sincere regrets that he would be unable to attend the Gala dinner, or the 'Oliver' performance; he has a good reason in that he and his wife are imminently expecting the birth of their third child.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Spring Gala is only a week away. We look forward to a wonderful, enjoyable evening. If you have not yet purchased tickets for yourselves and your friends, it's not quite too late to do so. Please contact Patti Koening (Lauren, G.1, Sean, G.3) at
929-0343, Milena Robertson (Andrew, Christopher, G.3) at 926.7979 or call the school by Monday, May 5 at the very latest. This is the only major fundraising event of the year and your participation helps ensure the success of Spring Gala.
Mulgrave's reputation continues to increase and our school continues to expand - in numbers, in its curriculum and, not surprisingly, in the size of our children! They grow so quickly and have so much energy.
We are continually looking at possibilities for additional space for expansion next year. I am pleased to say that, with the agreement of the North Shore Winter Club, the school will erect a temporary 3,200 sq. ft. gymnasium facility for use from October to April. Mulgrave will be using a semi-permanent structure, that will be removed during the summer months, covering one of the rooftop tennis courts. These types of buildings are used for many purposes, including gymnasiums, and are ideal for our short term requirements.
The benefits to our children will be tremendous - at last we shall have space for indoor sports and exercise. We hope to have a photograph of a typical gymnasium setup on display in the school lobby next week.
I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Gala next Friday!
Jim Robertson (Andrew, Christopher, G.3)
Have a good weekend
