Dear Parents,

This week we received the 1996/97 Commonwealth Essay booklet in which is listed the twenty-nine Mulgravians who will receive awards certificates at the annual ceremony on May 26.

Our students are: Charlsey Anthony, Aaron Bolus, Vickas Bowry, Aurora McDonald, Alexandra Chan, Tessa Clarance, Aliza Datu, Kiki Dimakis, Azhar Jaffer, Farah Kassam, Allison Kiloh, Michelle Mange, Jonathan Miller, Nick Miller, Fiona Neill, Gabrielle Reed, Daniel Schram, Ashley Taunton, Aadam Tejpar, Joel Thompson, Keiran Thompson, Ben Thompson, Alexandra Todd, Graydon Tullis, Marion Turner, Olivia Vipond, Kevan Ward, Jaclyn Wierenga and Jamie Wyse. Three of these children - Alexandra Todd, Ashley Taunton and Alexandra Chan will be presented with 'commended certificates, which indicate that their essays were considered for a major award. Well done to all these students; we are extremely proud of your efforts.

SCIENCE FAIR

Our second annual Science Fair bore witness to the high level of expectations we have for all our children at Mulgrave. The students were extremely proud of their projects, as well they might be, and the proffered personal explanations were delivered in confidence, knowledgeable tones. Projects such as these demand pacing, which for some, is a necessarily learned skill. One of our estimable teachers was heard to murmur, however; "only at Mulgrave would 116 projects be immaculately delivered, on time!"

Thank you for partnering your children. In beginning research work early, I believe that we are providing them with viable tools for the future. Next year, our Science Fair will be held in late February so that Intermediate students may be involved in the Regional Science Fair.

ROOTS - GETTING TO KNOW OUR ANCESTORS

Grade 4 and 5 students will be attending a lecture at the Italian Cultural Centre next Thursday, May 1, given by Dr. Jane Goodall, Scientific Director, Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation.

For 35 years Dr. Goodall has studied, lived with and reported on chimpanzees living wild in the forests of Africa. She amazed the world with her discovery that chimpanzees make and use tools, an activity previously thought to have separated humans from other animals. Her profound scientific research has laid the foundation for all future primate studies.

Affectionately known as the chimpanzee lady, Dr. Goodall has dedicated her life to understanding animal behaviour and conservation. While still active in the field, she now travels world-wide working with children, conservation groups and corporations to ensure the protection of animals endangered by the spread of civilization and industry.

FRANKLIN - LIFE IS A THREE RING CIRCUS

On Monday, May 5, Kindergarten and Grade 1 are going to the Centennial Theatre
to see a musical production based on the very popular books by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clarke. We may not have been able to get good tickets for them for the Children's Festival this year, but in this instance we have!

FAMILY MATH PROBLEM

Linda's grandmother had her 79th birthday on Sunday and her grandfather had his 84th birthday the day after. If Linda's mother bakes a cake for each of them and put the full number of birthday candles on each cake, how many candles were required?

If candles are sold in packets of ten candles, how many packets of candles did Linda's mother have to buy?

The answer is 153 candles and 17 packets.

No correct answers this week, but thank you Nabila Pirani (G.5) for trying!

CANADIAN INDEPENDENT JUNIOR SCHOOL HEADS
ASSOCIATION

I very much enjoyed meeting fifty or so Heads from across Canada. Many of the schools represented came from the East where the private school tradition has been alive and well for decades. In B.C., within the last few years, there has been a dramatic upsurge of 7% in children enrolled in the Independent system. The name of this school is now, hopefully known across the country, and I have forged friendship connections with colleagues from as far away as Newfoundland, all of whom were willing to share knowledge and experience with one another.

MULGRAVE SCHOOL YEARBOOK 1996/1997

With the end of another academic year fast approaching, preparations are now underway to compile the Mulgrave School 1996/97 Yearbook.

We are extremely grateful to those individuals and companies who so generously sponsored advertising space in last year's book.

A copy of the 1995/96 Yearbook will be available for your perusal in the school foyer next week together with forms detailing current advertising costs.

We will be delighted to hear from anyone willing to assist in this manner to enable us to produce another wonderful compilation of events and documentation of achievements which have occurred during your child's past twelve months at Mulgrave.

Thanking you in anticipation of your support
