Dear Parents

To-day at Assembly, Grade 2 presented a living 'mini-flyer' for our annual celebration to poetry, which this year will be held at the Centennial Theatre, next Wednesday, February 19 1t 7:00 p.m., Kieran Thompson looked most fetching as Ms. Millerd #2...!

The recital embraces contributions from the choir, from dance, from drama, from parents, from the classical guitar, as well as from the poetic muse, and we believe that you will be thoroughly well entertained.

Tickets are on sale in school now; they will also be sold at the Theatre. Next Wednesday the children will eat lunch early, enjoy their play-time, and then will be transported to the Centennial Theatre for an after-noon of rehearsal. We intend to leave the school at 12:45 p.m., since our rehearsal time begins at 1:00 p.m.

PLEASE COLLECT YOUR CHILDREN FROM THE THEATRE AT 3:30 p.m. WHEN THE CHILDREN WILL BE DISMISSED. We require the help of parent drivers to transport the children from school to the Theatre, as well as permission slips being completed and returned by Tuesday, February 18, 1997

ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE AT THE THEATRE BY 6:30 p.m. There is a concession booth in the foyer, so drinks and/or refreshments may be purchased by audience members. The programme will have a fifteen minute intermission and is likely to be complete by 9:00 p.m.

DRAMA

As a consequence of the evening performance, there will be no DRAMA class on WEDNESDAY, February 19, 1997.

Our rehearsals for "Oliver" are proceeding smoothly. Those children who do not have major singing or speaking roles are not required to be present at every rehearsal; they are, however, welcome to attend and watch the construction of a production. Putting a drama to-gether, whatever the form might be, is a fascinating process; it's rather like slotting to-gether the many variegated pieces of a jigsaw, and slowly, but surely, the picture is completed.

All of the Drama class will be involved in our production; some, perhaps, in more than one way. Participation, or being a jigsaw piece, however tiny, is monumentally exhilarating.

We hope to publish a detailed rehearsal schedule in the near future; meantime, I am very impressed by the level of enthusiasm, discipline, and grace, demonstrated by our children.

Thank you so much to those Mulgravians who have already contributed clothing for the costumes. We are so very lucky to have a superb designer and needlewoman, Mrs. Botwright, (James G.3) in our parent body. The research she has already undertaken in order to ensure the accuracy of the "Oliver" costumes is overwhelming.

MATH QUESTION (February 7)

Amit is arranging a display of canned goods in the supermarket. He starts by setting out a row of 25 cans, then puts a row of 24 cans on top, then 23 cans, and so on until he places one can on the very top of the pyramid. How many cans did he use to make the display?

ANSWER 325 CANS

Well done Brandon Ayers (G.2), Nabila Pirani G.5 and Azhar Jaffer G.4), all of whom provided the correct answer.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Our Odyssey of the Mind teams will be competing on Saturday, March 1. The B.C. Odyssey of the Mind Association Newsletter has included some wise words, which I believe apply to all of us when they are applied to life itself.

The contest lasts for moments
Though the training's taken years
It wasn't the winning alone that
Was worth the work and tears
The applause will be forgotten
The prize will be misplaced
But the long hard hours of practice
Will never be a waste
For trying to win
You build the skill
You learn that winning
Depends on will
You never grow by how much you win
You only grow by how much you put in
So any new challenge
You've just begun
Put forth your best effort
And you've already won.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Negotiations are proceeding in a positive manner towards securing the site for our next phase of expansion. The present timetable should allow us to finalize the conditions by the end of this school year.

Richard Bolus

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-CHAIRMAN

Over the past three weeks we have devised a plan which allows Mulgrave School to offer, for the first time, two Kindergarten classes for the next school year, 1997/98. Negotiations have been completed with the North Shore Winter Club which allows Mulgrave the use of a new, expanded Assembly area, a new Music room, as well as two new classrooms for our expanded school population next year. We believe that it is critical for Mulgrave to begin expanding the student body since we anticipate a far greater expansion in 1999.

Wayne Smithies

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Hamer
Headmistress
