Dear Parents

"Gong Hei fat Choy" (Cantonese) or "Gung Xi fa Chai" (Mandarin). Both these Chinese languages wish you a prosperous New Year, in this the year of the Ox. Thanks to Mr. Pao (Brandon - K, Bernice & Denise - G.5) we at Mulgrave have a deeper understanding of the languages spoken in China, a country which has a population 40 times that of Canada. We learned that currently in China, Mandarin Chinese is spoken by 70% of the people. It is the official language of China in that it is taught in all schools, as well as being seen on signs everywhere. Mr. Pao, who once again helped organise the very special Chinese New Year assembly, explained that Mandarin is the dialect to know and when Hong Kong is returned to China in July 1997, Mandarin will become the official language there too, even though Cantonese will continue to be the language taught in schools for the foreseeable future.

The understanding of cultures, traditions and mores, is, I believe, both rich and imperative in our multi-cultural society. The more we share, the more we grow; the more we understand, the more tolerant we become, and the more the natural human desire for knowledge becomes both whetted and sated by exposure to different cultures and ideas the more rounded educated individuals we become.

We very much appreciate Mr. Pao's contribution in this regard, as well as that of his collaborators, Mrs. Pao, Ms. Quan (Alexandra Chan, G.5) and Mrs. Ferguson.

LETTER FROM HILARY SMYTH (G.3)

Dear Parents

Mrs. Hamer send a note home for Grade 2, 3, 4 and 5, about Bard on the Beach Shakespearean Acting classes. The acting classes are great, you learn about Shakespeare, and do plays. The teacher is fantastic. I especially enjoyed getting a script about a page that Shakespeare wrote and I read a part of it.

I would recommend that your child attend the Bard on the Beach Acting Classes.
