Dear Parents

 

This morning, with courage, fortitude, perseverance, hard work, artistic endeavour and spirit, a group of parents had a captive audience laughing, singing, dancing, answering trivia questions whilst being thoroughly entertained. We have in our parent body emergent writers, clowns, set designers and free-spirited performers .......! Mulgravians have very special parents - thank you!

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION SWIM MEET

We thought our team of eighteen swimmers at the I.S.A. Swim Meet in Victoria would be the very first Mulgrave team to be known as the Mustangs - unfortunately, Point Grey Academy pipped us to the post in that regard with their newly designed "Mustang' banner. Nonetheless, our swim team Gabrielle Reed, Michael Wilding, Sterling McElroy, Edi Mange, Costa Dimakis, Hilary Smyth, Natasha Molthagen, Kiki Dimakis, Michelle Mange, Ryan Vaisler, Tyler Solloway, Nabila Pirani, Aliya Bhatia, Kailey Spooner, Fiona Rayher, Elyssia Patterson and Geoffrey Houghton fared extraordinarily well; each student swam his/her heart out for their school, and whilst Ms. Straub and Ms. Rees do not have final standings of the eleven competing teams, Mulgrave, a minuscule team, made its presence firmly felt. This is an annual event for elementary aged children (G.3, 5, 5, 6 and 7) who attend I.S.A. schools in Vancouver and its environs, as well as Vancouver Island Independent Schools. For the children, there is the experience of team/school spirit, the chance to meet and compete with children from other schools, as well as to engage in one of our four strands, Physical Education. There are very few sporting competitive events arranged for elementary school aged children; thus far, we have entered teams in all of those for which we are eligible to so do and we shall certainly continue this involvement. Thank you to all our swimmers, and their very supportive parents who drove the children to early morning swim practices as well as all the way to Vancouver Island. We hear the Mulgrave parental cheers were splendidly vociferous. To our coaches, Ms. Straub and Ms. Rees; thank you and well-done! When we have chosen out team name #2, we will certainly let you know!

SKIING

Our ski programme began last Tuesday and despite the torrential rain Ms. Millerd and her husband, Darrel Sharpe, departed Mulgrave with an enthusiastic band. We are likely the only lower mainland school to offer such a programme to such young skiers and I would like to proffer our thanks to Ms. Millerd and Mr. Sharpe for their super idea, as well as their hard work in organising the skiing programme for us. As always parental help (Mrs. Bolus, Mrs. Kiloh, Mrs. Neill, Ms. Fraser, Ms. Yoshida) is invaluable - we could not do all that we do without you!

A POETIC BOUQUET

Mulgrave's annual poetry recital will be held at the Centennial Theatre on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:00 p.m. Our programme will include dance, choral music, drama, individual and group recitations by the children as well as contributions from parents and staff. If you are a parent longing for poetic exposure, please let me know by Wednesday, February 5. Unpublished poets should also apply!

Tickets will be on sale at the school office from Wednesday, February 5. There are 718 seats in the Centennial Theatre; the seating will be Festival-viz.-unnumbered tickets.

In order to obviate the cost of renting this fine facility, the minimum donation suggested for each ticket is $5.00 per person.

The Centennial Theatre is embarking upon a much needed renovation project to expand the lobby, provide ramps to accommodate patrons with physical disabilities and provide accessible washrooms. In order to fund this renovation project, the City and District of North Vancouver as well as the North Vancouver Recreation Commission have approved a ticket surcharge for all events at the theatre.

North Vancouver elementary school-events incur a 50 cent surcharge for every ticket; this means that if tickets are sold at $5.00, the school receives $4.50 for each ticket.

AIR BAGS

Advice from I.C.B.C. indicates that children should not be passengers in front seats; rear facing 'jump seats' are also regarded as dangerous. On all Field Trips, therefore, Mulgrave parent drivers are asked to adhere to the guidelines of I.C.B.C.

CLOCK QUESTION

How many times will the new school clock chime between the start of the school day (say, 08:15) and the same time on the next day?

How many times will the minute hand overtake the hour hand in that same time period?

Question 1:

2 x(1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12) = 2 x 78 = 156

or for the mathematically inclined, using the formula for summing N numbers (where N is even):

2 x (N+1) x(N/2)

2 x (12+1) x (12/2) = 2x 13 x 6 = 156

Question 2:

The minute hand will overtake the hour hand once every hour, except for the period between 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock where it will only happen once in two hours. So, every 12 hours the minute hand will pass the hour hand (eleven) times. So, in 24 hours, it will pass 22 times.

We have received only one correct answer for question # 1, Nabila Pirani - G.5, provided the correct answer to Question 1.

WELCOME TO TOMOKA

Tomoko Yoshida has joined us until October 1997. She is a welcome addition to our staff, not only because she has already begun teaching Japanese after one week of being in Canada but also because she brings with her knowledge of many sports including ice hockey, skiing and golf. Special thanks to the Todds for hosting Tomoko.
