Dear Parents.

The Annual General Meeting of Societies are not notable for large enthusiastic audiences. We appreciate the physical manifestation of parental support at our Annual General Meeting last evening; no nid-nodding grey beards, nor half closed eyes were apparent, but rather a room filled with supportive, energetic, alert and generous-minded individuals without whom this school could not be the vibrant educational institution it is.

I am lost for words (it happens!) in attempting to express my thanks to our (soon to be) departing Chairman, Richard Bolus; former Chairman and latterly Treasurer,

Rick Bryant, as well as Andrew Woods, Chair of the Technology Committee (and namer of our servers!)

Mr. Bolus inadvertently and innocently offered his services when his son first attended Mulgrave in 1993 - little did he realise how great the service would become. I suspect that he intended to coach a fledgling Mulgrave ice hockey team in years to come rather than become Chairman of the Board and chief architect to boot!

I think Mrs. Bryant may have offered her husband's services and for that we owe her an enormous debt of gratitude .With his wise financial counsel and strong leadership, Mulgrave has developed well-rooted, solid foundations.

Mr. Woods leaves a legacy of technology for Mulgrave students when he departs these shores for his native England. He will be recalled to mind easily especially when we make use of his Renaissance named servers;, Bacon, Machiabelli, DaVinci, Descartes, Marlowe, Newton, Shakespeare, and George!

Joining the Board are; Tony Allard (Gage, K), Glen Houghton (Geoffrey, G.3, Alyssa, G.5), Alnoor Kassam (Sarah, K, Kalim, G.4, Farah, G.5), Anne Wallis (Lutetia, G.1), and Harry Wierenga (Lauren, K, Jaclyn G2). Valerie McQuaid (Olivia and Rebecca, K Natalie, G.2) will join the Board when Mr. Bolus steps down in the not too distant future. I look forward to working with our expanded board, and appreciate their congruent willingness to serve our children and our school.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Mr. Bryant who presented the Mulgrave Independent School Society statements for the year ending June 30, 1996, is happy to answer any questions members may have regarding them. Should you wish the peruse the statement, copies are available from Mrs. Grant in the front office.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

The Odyssey of the Mind groups are now fully immersed in their projects, in preparation for the Richmond Competition early in March. Part of their task involves them in researching and costing out supplies for their sets. The children have to make their own calls to suppliers. You may receive a phone call from an Odyssey member seeking guidance as to help with make-up work shops, or name of suppliers, or technical advice as we know there is a wealth of talent and resources within the parent body. As it is part of the competition rules, their parents and teacher coaches are not allowed to assist them in these areas. We hope that you do not object to the Odyssey of the Mind members using their initiative in this way and rest assured, we will be monitoring who and what they call about.

Thank you for your support.

HONORARY GOVERNORS

Deadline for suggestions for Mulgrave Honorary Governors extended!!

As mentioned in Volume 1 of the Mulgrave Musings the Education committee is asking parents for the names of individuals who we could approach to become Honorary Governors of Mulgrave School. There are many people who live in Vancouver who have accomplished extraordinary things in their lives and whose inspiration, expertise and international recognition would make them the perfect choice for Honorary Governor of Mulgrave School. If you know of anyone who you feel fits this description please forward their names along with a short paragraph describing why they should become one of the Honorary Governors to the Education Committee as soon as possible.

FRENCH LANGUAGE PROJECT GRANT

In March 1996, we applied for a French Language Special Grant for the 1996-97 school year. I am exceedingly happy to tell you that we have been awarded $9,356.00. This will be spent in the acquisition of computers, as well as software for the creation of a mini- language lab.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Thank you to Ms. Straub for once again organising this event which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the participants. The help of our athletic parents was really appreciated. Further details regarding the 'skip', count and the total amount of monies collected will be in next week's newsletter.

PARENT ASSEMBLY

I am looking forward with huge anticipation to the Parents' Assembly next Friday, January 31. Please do join us if you are able! I would also like to nudge parental memories regarding our up-coming poetry recital! Mrs. Penn has nobly volunteered to recite - please take up the gauntlet she has thrown down!

Have a 'guid' weekend (it's Burn's Day on Saturday, January 25th!)

Yours sincerely

Linda Hamer
Headmistress
