Dear Parents,

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all! My trip to London included a visit with Lord Normanby, the Earl of Mulgrave, who is the school's honorary patron. He was exceedingly delighted to receive his Christmas present from his name-sake school - a copy of the G.3 cook book, as well as the latest edition of the Mulgrave Odyssey. As a parent of two small children, he has spent much time researching the ideal educational venue for his off-spring. Lord Normanby commented that his visit to Mulgrave last spring had left enduring memories of confident, happy, eager, highly motivated children, who appeared to love learning and school, and that as an institution, Mulgrave was hard to equal.

I also saw the London production of "Oliver" and have returned, brimming with purloined ideas! Mr. McLean and myself have this week been listening to the singing voices of those students who want to be members of our cast; we should be able to announce this information very shortly.

ART AND CRAFT CLUB

We are looking forward to many wonderful and creative sessions starting on Monday 20th from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mrs. Block, Elyssia's Patterson's grandmother, has prepared some exciting crafts and has requested some help collecting the following items:

Please bring all or any of the above to Mrs.Grant at Reception as soon as possible.

TENNIS LESSONS

Mr. Lea has informed Mulgrave that the Monday tennis class has 6 lessons left, the Tuesday class has 3, Wednesday and Thursday class has four lessons left.

If you would like further information, please call Mr. Lea, the Tennis Pro at the North Shore Winter Club - 485-4135.

HONORARY GOVERNORS

Deadline for suggestions for Mulgrave Honorary Governors extended!!

As mentioned in Volume 1 of the Mulgrave Musings the Education committee is asking parents for the names of individuals who we could approach to become Honorary Governors of Mulgrave School. There are many people who live in Vancouver who have accomplished extraordinary things in their lives and whose inspiration, expertise and international recognition would make them the perfect choice for Honorary Governor of Mulgrave School. If you know of anyone who you feel fits this description please forward their names along with a short paragraph describing why they should become one of the Honorary Governors to the Education Committee by Monday, January 21, 1997.

S.P.C.A.

Norman Grant would like to thank all those students and parents who partook in Christmas picture-taking with Santa last December. He thanks Mr. Larose very much for giving his time and talent, as well as taking such good photographs. He hopes very much that you enjoyed seeing that picture in the North Shore News (Norman, Abigail and Mrs. Grant did!)

Norman was able to donate $200 plus over $100 worth of food to the S.P.C.A. (as well as pay Mr. Larose for the film and developing costs which were $176) who were, of course, very grateful to receive donations. Mulgrave School would like to thank Dr. Clarance for her organisation of the event.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting will be held next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Jim Graham Lounge at the North Shore Winter Club. Please do make an effort to attend this very important meeting, at which we shall be electing several new directors.

LIBRARY SEEKING WINTER TERM VOLUNTEERS

The beginning of a new term inspires me to publicly thank the five mothers who diligently covered hundreds of books for our library during the fall term, namely Mrs. Charania, Langridge, Murphy, Quan, Todd.

For the winter term I will also require some helpers for book repair processing and covering. If you are interested, please leave your name with me or Mrs. Grant by Tuesday, January 21.

Thank you again for the continued support our library receives from all members of our Mulgravian family.

CLOCK QUESTION

How many times will the new school clock chime between the start of the school day (say, 08:15) and the same time on the next day?

How many times will the minute had overtake the hour hand in that same time period?

COMPUTER UPDATE - The Network is here!

Over the holiday's the school's computer network was installed. There are now 16 multimedia computers on the network including 10 PCs and 6 Macintoshes. One PC is installed in each class (K-5) and one Macintosh is installed in each of the higher grades (2-5). There are two additional PCs for students use in the library as well as a PC reserved for the library Circulation and Checkout functions. The file server is also stored in the library. There are 2 additional Macintoshes in the front office and in the staff room. Wiring for 32 ethernet ports has been installed and a 16 port ethernet hub presently connects half of these ports. The PCs are Pentium 100's with 16Mb RAM, 1GB harddrives, CDRoms, and speakers. The file server is a Pentium 166 with 64Mb RAM, and a 4GB harddrive. The Macintoshes have 68040 processors, 8Mb RAM, 400Mb harddrives, and CDRoms.

The primary network protocol being used is TCP/IP which will facilitate internet access. The Macintoshes also use the Appletalk protocol to communicate. To date, the following software has been installed:

This software will allow each student to have their own home directory on the server, an email account, the ability to publish content to the Web server, access to the library system, as well as accessing the various online resources (Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Educational, etc) which the school owns. The network has been designed so that this functionality is available from both PCs and Macintoshes from anywhere in the school.

We are presently in the process of adding a dial-in line for administrative purposes as well as to provide limited file transfer and email capability to students and parents. The longer term goal is to get a permanent internet connection which is targeted to be in place for the next school year in September. The library software which is presently single user is also being upgraded to the multi-user version. The major outstanding issue is to identify and install the educational and office software to be used at the school. This is being discussed by staff and members of the computer committee.

JUMPROPE FOR HEART

Thursday, January 23 at 1:30 until 3:00 p.m.

ALL CHILDREN SHOULD COME TO SCHOOL WEARING THEIR TRACK-SUITS

Do you remember what fun children, faculty and parents had skipping in a myriad of diverse fashions last summer? The Heart & Stroke Foundation have devised a programme which not only teaches children the importance of caring for their hearts all through their lives, but also raises funds for their organisation.

EVERY ONE IS WELCOME TO JOIN IN THE FUN!

If you want to watch, we would be delighted to have you with us; if you would like to help, we would love you to sign up on the sheet by the main office. Donations, instead of pledges, make co-ordinating much easier for Ms. Straub, and she would really appreciate your help in this. The 'money' envelopes are due at school by Friday, January 31. 1997

SWIMMING

On Thursday, January 30, the Independent School Association is holding a swim meet in Victoria, Vancouver Island. The Competition is open for Grade 3 and up, and any child within this age range who would like to participate should please contact Ms. Straub. Thirteen swimmers have signed up to date ...

MULGRAVE TEAM NAME

Collingwood has the Cavaliers, Vancouver has the Grizzlies and the Canucks ...

WHAT SHALL WE CALL OUR TEAM?

Please give your suggestions, which will be cheerfully received by Mrs. Grant, by Friday , January 24, 1997

It's wonderful to be back at school.

Have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely,
