Dear Parents,

Gazing at our Pot-pourri with tremendous pleasure and pride, I could not help but recall our very first concert three years ago when ten children, then too, delighted and entranced their parents and their teacher, albeit in far simpler surroundings. I know now, when communities collaborate in faith, and hard work coupled with enthusiasm pervades, that dreams really do come true.

This morning we were entranced by scarlet-hatted elf like parents; their song, most musically performed is attached. We thank them for their tributes, and for their courage in performing 'impromptu' style. We all loved it!

POETRY RECITAL

Our next performance will also be at the Centennial Theatre on February 19 at 7:00 p.m. when the school will present our second annual Poetry Recital. We may incorporate dance and music since we have our own faculty experts at Mulgrave, and we would also like to invite any parent, or groups thereof, to recite favourite poems. Please let either Mrs. Grant or myself know if you would like to be a participant.

PARENTS ASSEMBLY

Mr. Kassam (Sarah-K, Kalim-G.4, Farah-G.5) has nobly taken up my challenge which I recently issued at a Friday assembly, and, together with the "Tribute" author, Mrs. Clarance, will organise a Friday parent performed assembly. This momentous occasion will occur on Friday, January 31st, 1997 at 830 a.m. If you are interested in participating, please complete and return the slip incorporated in this newsletter by Wednesday, December 18, 1996. We will gladly forward your Thespian offers to your directors!

If you wish to use this approach to reduce your 1996 tax burden, the school will be pleased to issue a tax deductible receipt. Cheques must be received at the school before December 31 and should be made out to the "Mulgrave Independent School Society"

NORTHPOLE NEWS FLASH !!!

It seems "Norman" Grant has been growing antlers ever since he started hearing the jingling of bells around North Vancouver ... Could it be that our canine companion is turning into a reindeer? Come see for yourself on Tuesday, December 17th afternoon... Norman (who is known to communicate telepathically with his mistress) assures us that Big Guy in the Red Suit is dropping in on Mulgrave that day! Apparently, Santa has agreed to pose with Mulgravians and "Norman" or an adoptable S.P.C.A. cat. In the spirit of Christmas, Mr. Larose has kindly offered to use his photographic wizardry.

Santa only asks one thing... He knows Mulgravians have gleaned more than a smattering of veterinary knowledge this term. Mulgravians are now also very aware of the plight of homeless animals. Santa is hoping the Mulgravians can help care for a stray by making a donation (cash* or dog/cat food) to the Vancouver S.P.C.A. in exchange for a photo op. Thank you in advance for your compassion

(*suggested donation is $5.00)

MULGRAVE ODYSSEY MAGAZINE

Our crack team of intrepid Mulgrave reporters has worked hard to produce this year's first issue of "The Mulgrave Odyssey".

Thanks to the invaluable assistance, hard work, and guidance of Ms. Sacchetti, the first issue will be available for your perusal next Friday morning. You can read it with your Kids Care Coffee.

Donations will be gratefully accepted to cover printing costs.

PARENT/TEACHER EVENINGS

The staff and I believe we need two consecutive evenings, rather than one long evening. Please, therefore, mark your calendars, noting the additional date, and change of times in respect of the March Parent/Teacher evenings

Wednesday, March 12, 1997 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Thursday March 13, 1997 3:45 - 6:15 p.m.

SCHOOL CLOCK

Thanks to Mr. Staff (Olivia, Rebecca - K, Natalie, G.2) the 'Westminster' clock which I purchased from the local antique dealer (who also provided us with our school bell) is gently ticking the minutes, and chiming the hours of Mulgrave's days away.

Mr.Staff provided a 'minute' description of the clock's ancient innards (1882) at our Thursday assembly. Mulgrave's clock is ever so slightly eccentric, but we welcome and laud uniqueness!. Thank you also to Mr. Wierenga (Lauren-K, Jaclyn -G.2) son of a watch-maker who provided Mr. Staff with inherited wisdom, and also to Mrs. Staff, who tipped me off regarding her husband's fixer-upper skills!

QUIZ QUESTION

by Nicholas Miller

How many states in the United States of America?

Answer: Five states in the United States designate themselves as commonwealths; Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Massachusetts. A commonwealth is a self-governing autonomous political unit.

No one managed to provide the correct answer! Thanks to those who tried.

SCHOOL EQUIPMENT BOX

WANTED! Foam soccer balls and skipping ropes designed for indoor play. We would appreciate any donations for our school equipment box.

CREATIVE WRITINGS

THE MAD SCIENTIST

There once was a mad scientist. He was very mysterious. His name was Robin. He lived in a huge laboratory. His wife's name was Delores. Robin always made big experiments with all his recipes. One day he mixed all his stuff together. The next day he looked to see what happened and nothing was there

He was scared because he thought he had made a monster. He got into his car to look for this monster he had made. Then he saw all these people running away. He looked around the corner and standing there was a big monster. He walked over to have a better look at the monster. When the monster saw him he picked him up and squeezed him as hard as he could. Rob didn't die because the monster only did it for two seconds and then put him down. When he put Rob down he ran away. When he got back to his house, he looked around for the monster book so he could make the monster go away. He looked and he looked. Finally he saw it in the index. He flipped to the page and looked. He found it in the top of the page. So he rushed back to the place where the monster was. But he wasn't there any more. So he hopped into his car to look for him. He looked and he looked until he found the monster in Edgemont Village. He was running around stepping on cars and crushing them with his big feet.

Rob tried and tried to get him to stop but he just couldn't. He looked again in the magic book. He looked up monsters. He finally found it in the top right corner. He read it out loud to the monsters. After he waited for a while the monster fainted away into ashes. Rob gathered them up and apologized to the people about their cars and Rob never thought about doing that again.

FALL FAIR

On behalf of all the parents and staff of Mulgrave School, the Fall Fair Committee would like to thank all of the donors and sponsors who gave so generously to make our event such a wonderful success.

Without this support, we could not possible carry on the fundraising activities which are so critical to the success of our school. The spirit of partnership and cooperation that is unfailingly demonstrated by our business friends is what community is all about.
