Dear Parents

This past Tuesday, our Grade 5 girls played in the Independent School Association Volleyball Playday which was held at Crofton House. Our team coached by Ms. Rees and Ms. Straub and which comprised Charlsey Anthony, Alexandra Chan, Emily Gould, Alyssa Houghton, Farah Kassam, Charlotte Nobles, Bernice & Denise Pao, Elyssia Patterson, Nabila Pirani, Fiona Rayher and Kailey Spooner, were faced with opponents one full year older, and is some instances, many sizes larger. I felt privileged to be able to watch their first two games in which I saw the emergence of team spirit characterised by tight organisation, indomitability, courage under pressure, and sheer ebullience. As their confidence grew, Mulgrave's girls began to taste the pleasure of victory; Meadowridge and St. Margaret's School were defeated by Mulgrave, whilst the team tied against Collingwood. When one realizes that all the other schools were able to draw from a much larger pool of players, one begins to appreciate just how well our girls did.

Congratulations team and coaches!

YEAR BOOKS

Ms. Gowan (Elliott, G.3) has informed me that there are still about ten Year Books available for purchase. Christmas presents for proud grand-parents, perhaps?
Please contact Mrs. Grant if you are interested.

FALL FAIR MUSIC

The kind individual who loaned a CD and tapes for music for the Fall Fair should please contact Helen Turner (Glenn - K, Marion - G.5) at 983-2124.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
WEDNESDAY - NOVEMBER 27, 1996

Sign up sheets have been posted outside the school office. Interviews with classroom teachers are 15 minutes in length and begin at 3:45 p.m. A dinner break will be taken by all teachers from 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m., and the interviews will thereafter resume until 9:00 p.m. Specialist teachers (French, Music and P.E.) will offer ten minute interviews, since they all teach every child in the school their own particular subject area; the same hours apply.

** If you cannot schedule an appearance on Wednesday, please do speak to Mrs. Grant, who will gladly arrange an appointment with whom ever faculty member(s) you have been unable to meet with.

I shall be in school until 6:30 p.m. and will be glad to meet with any of you who may desire to do so. Thereafter, I am required to attend another educational meeting of significance, and so will not be available after 6:30 p.m. - I will be in every other day, though!

SNOW CLOSURES

It is always a difficult, and, indeed, a reluctant decision for any school administrator to make to close a school as a result of adverse weather conditions. In common with most other Independent Schools, Mulgrave is generally not an institution to which pupils walk. We draw our population from the very farthest reaches (and the nearest) of both West and North Vancouver, as well as from Burnaby and Port Moody. We are situated at the base of three steep hills and from which ever way one travels, these slopes have to be negotiated. From 5:30 a.m. on November 20, we were in contact with all the appropriate authorities (Weather Bureau, and local Police Departments). A decision is required to be made by 6:45 a.m. so that CBC - 690 AM and CKNW - 980 AM radio stations can broadcast any school closures by 7:00 a.m. North Vancouver District Police warned of severe black ice conditions on the afore mentioned hills, and this, fact together with information accumulated from all other sources, culminated in the decision to close the school Please remember if and when inclement severe weather conditions strike again to listen to the 7:00 a.m. broadcast on CBC - 690 AM and/or CKNW - 980 AM.

UPPER PRIMARY MEETING
GRADES 2 AND 3

Just as we recently held a Kindergarten evening meeting for interested parents, we intend to hold a meeting for parents of Grades 2 and 3 children on Monday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Room. Class and Specialist teachers will walk you through your children's days, as well as answering any questions you may have regarding the Mulgrave curriculum and/or school organisation. If you are able to attend, please sign the form herein , and return it to the office by Wednesday, November 27, 1996.

NB: Grades 1, 4 and 5 are not being forgotten! Grade meetings will be held for you early in the New Year.

FALL FAIR

The Fall Fair Committee have submitted the summary of Fall Fair profits - a stupendous net profit of $9,214.16 which represents a 50% increase on last year's profits. How the funds are to be spent will be shared with you shortly, but the Music and P.E. department, as well as our Librarian, extend very special thanks to you - each and every one.

WISH LIST

The staff-room fridge which neatly fitted in the hut is unable to cope with our 14 staff members. If anyone has a family sized fridge in good working order, we would be VERY happy to receive it! As well, not all of our class-rooms are equipped with CD/Cassette players, although we do have peripatetic players to share amongst the teachers. If you are replacing your own CD/Cassette player or have an extra unused machine, we would be grateful for any donations. A more ambitious dream is for a 24 seater school bus ........!
