Dear Parents,

SUDDENLY SHAKESPEARE

Grades 2 - 5 were monumentally entertained this week by a group of (literally!) travelling players from the Carousel Theatre Company. The actors, who performed abridged versions of "The Tempest", "MacBeth", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Twelfth Night" were astounded and delighted when our children joined in their speaking of Shakespeare's eloquent and beautiful language.

MEG HICKLING

Parents were equally entertained by the knowledgeable and witty words of Meg Hickling. Next week, on Thursday, November 7, Mrs. Hickling will return to school to talk with our students. Parents are most welcome to join their children in the Assembly Room, and share an important learning experience with them.

ASSEMBLY ROOM

Kindergarten and G.1 9.00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. (approx.)

G. 2 and G.3 - 9:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

*Recess will be earlier for this group

G. 4 and 5 1:15 p.m. - approx. 3:15 p.m.

*NO ERIC
(Everyone Reading in Class) will not be held for this group today.

I add these additional organisational comments for your children, since I already anticipate their questions, and know that they enjoy reading the newsletters.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING

Mea Culpa Jonathan Miller, G.5! We forgot to mention that you too were a trusty Mulgravian runner at last week's meet.

LIBRARY DONATION - PICTET (CANADA) & CO.

Mrs. Clarance (Conor-K, Tessa-G.2) has asked me to state that this prestigious company are her employers, and not her clients.

FIELD TRIPS

Parents who drive children on Field Trips are reminded that the children should return to school directly after the trip is over; side trips cause spanners in the works of our carefully and tightly organised daily schedule.

ERIF

(Everybody Reading in French)

Mrs. James (Kathleen, G.2) and Ms. Tuck would once again like to offer our students with an extensive background or outstanding ability in French the opportunity to enjoy books and improve their reading in French. The following students will be invited to join ERIF, to be held in the Library during afternoon homeroom on Thursdays, starting November 7. Thanks to Mrs. James for again volunteering her time for this enrichment program.

Grade 2 Brandon Ayers; Hilary Ison; Kathleen James; Alexandra Todd

Grade 3 Allison Kiloh; Sterling McElroy; Christopher Robertson; Olivia Vipond

Grade 4 Aaron Bolus; Nicholas Miller; Kalim Kassam; Aadam Tejpar

Grade 5 Farah Kassam; Nabila Pirani; Kevan Ward

The students will choose one book per week to read to each other and to take home.

Books should come back to school every Thursday.

~Ms. Tuck

KINDERGARTEN EVENING

A REMINDER to all Kindergarten parents that our evening will be held next Monday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Room. Roll back the years and be a Kindergarten child (but at Mulgrave!) once more.

DR. MICHAEL SMITH

Mrs. Clarance (Conor - K, Tessa- G.2) recently contacted Dr. Michael Smith, Peter Wall Distinguished Professor of Biotechnology at the University of British Columbia, and joint winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, as well as being the inspiration for our Smith House, with a view to having Dr. Smith come and talk to our student body. By virtually return of post, Dr. Smith replied and I quote the first two paragraphs of his delightful letter so that you may share its contents with we who have read it.

Thank you for your letter describing Mulgrave School with its surprise news that one of the school's four Houses has been named after me. I am overwhelmed. I am particularly delighted that green has been chosen as the House Colour. It is my favourite colour and it symbolizes so well that which is so beautiful about British Columbia.

I am taking a sabbatical leave this year which involves my being away from Vancouver and which obliges me to say no to invitations such as yours with which, normally, I would be happy to comply. Perhaps I can visit Mulgrave School some time in the Fall of 1997........

FALL FAIR

For weeks and weeks, the Fall Fair Committee, jointly chaired by Mrs. Reed (Gabrielle - G.2) and Mrs. Thompson (Kieran - G.2, Joel - G.5) have been immersed in Fall Fair matters. To-morrow, Saturday, November 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. dawns the day for which they have all been working so very hard. While I sat in the "wooden hut", I dreamed many dreams for, and of Mulgrave. None of these visions would have come true without the continuing support, energy, perseverance and faith gifted by the parents. In our larger 'second stage' setting this truth remains inviolate.

Thank you so much for everything that you as a parent body have done, are doing and will continue to do for Mulgrave, the pinnacle of which is your children. Dreams only become reality when a tremendously dynamic force transforms vision into life. Serendipity, of course, plays its part, and I have always believed that Mulgrave was meant to be.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Fair tomorrow.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Hamer
Headmistress

MULGRAVE SQUASH CLUB

To kick off with exhibition match!

Ms. Tuck will be starting extra-curricular squash for students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 next month. The season opener will be an exhibition match between two Mulgrave parents, Mr. Mustaq Pirani (Nabila, G.5 and Safeeya, K) and Mr. Mike Penn (Nicholas, G. 1). Interested students will be invited to attend at lunch-hour (12:35 p.m.) on Thursday, December 5. This will be a chance for some who have never seen the game to get an idea of what it is like. Since space is extremely limited behind the court, we will probably not be able to accommodate parents this time around. Thanks to both volunteer players for helping to promote this great sport.

Please fill in the form below if you are interested in having your child receive instruction in the basics of the game of squash during term 2. Once I have your responses, I will be able to group the children appropriately. At present, we have the use of only one court, so numbers will have to be limited (maximum of 6). As with skating, we will rotate the students through blocks of lessons to give everyone a chance. I have arranged to buy junior equipment from Dunlop at a wholesale price. Junior racquets will cost $27 each and Canadian Squash Association approved eye-guards (mandatory for juniors) $16. In addition, I will need to buy starter and regulation balls. Therefore, there will be a fee of $15 to join the squash club. This will allow your child to borrow squash equipment for his/her lessons. If you would prefer, you may order equipment for your child to keep below-but the $15 fee will still apply. Some of the children may be big enough to use adult racquets; if any of you have racquets at home you do not need, we would be pleased to have them. P. E. strip or full ÒwhitesÓ and non-marking court shoes will be the required dress.

I am looking forward to seeing your youngsters on court!

~Ms. Tuck
