Dear Parents,

Thank you to the Ferguson family (Alexander, K), the Anthony family (Charlsey, G.5) Mr. Cooper (Sarah, G.1) Nabila Pirani (G.5), Mrs. Clarance (Conor, K, Tessa, G.2), Mr. Schramm (Daniel, G.2) who all supplied me with the correct answer to the last week's mathematical problem.

MATH PROBLEM # 3

If you earned $125 every day, how long would it take to earn $1000000?

SOLUTION

It will take 8,000 (or 21 years, 330 days, allowing for 5 leap years!) to make 1 million dollars.

From 'THE CONVERSATION PIECE'

(Creative questions to tickle the mind)
by Bret Nicholaus and Paul Lowrie

1. If you could acquire a characteristic of one particular animal, what would it be, and why?

2. What is your favourite day of the year?

3. If you were to write a book, what would you choose as the topic?

These questions are designed to provide opportunities for creative thinking!..........

4. If you were an entry in the dictionary, under which word would people find you?

PHOTOGRAPHIC DISPLAY

Bill Larose (William, G.3) has an exhibition of his photographs on display at Kerrisdale Camera in West Vancouver. This is the first of a three part series showing the children of Mulgrave. The children currently featured are Thomas Klein, Andrew Langridge, William Larose, Matthew Larose (Kindergarten 1997), Fiona Rayher, Andrew Robertson, Warren Smithies, Timothy Swanson and Lutetia Wallis-Mayer

MULGRAVE MUGS

The Fall Fair committee has arranged to have coffee mugs made with our beautiful school crest, designed by Mrs. Robertson (Andrew, Christopher, G.3). These will be available for sale at next Friday's coffee gathering in the foyer for $10 each, and also at the Fall Fair. Thanks to the Collister family (James, K) for producing the mugs at cost. All proceeds will go to the Fall Fair.

FRENCH ASSEMBLY

October 25

Next week, we will have our first assembly "en francais". It will feature the Grade 5, Grade 2 and Kindergarten classes, the other classes to be featured in our next French assembly. Don't worry if your French is rusty. It will all be easy to understand and there will be no "dictee" !

KIDS CARE CLUB

The Kids Care Club would like to thank all the parents who are supporting our Friday morning coffee offerings. We have already raised enough to pay for three monthsÕ sponsorship of our foster child in Ghana. Thanks also to Bean Around the World, who supplied sixteen mugs. Please note that food and drink may not be taken into the assembly room; please help us to set the example for the children who know this rule. We will have one of our club members stand by the assembly room door to collect the cups.

The next project that the children in the club will undertake is the coat and parcel check at the fall fair. The children have volunteered for one shift each. They should arrive at the Library ten minutes before their shift starts. Please check the list below and let one of us know if there are conflicts with soccer games or other activities. A few of the older children will also be working in the games area, so please let us know if there are conflicts once the schedule for the games area is posted in the front hall.

HELP!

Allison Kiloh has misplaced a labelled, uniform sweater. School checks have been to no avail. Could you please do a home check of your child's uniform, and make sure that he/she is wearing his/her own? This is a less odd request than it may sound!

Funds available for Distribution

Each casino share is calculated by dividing the TOTAL CASINO WIN FOR THE MONTH by the number of operating days in that month. The daily casino share is then multiplied by the number of days assigned to each Licensee to determine the amount of the payment due to the licensee. This month, the licensee will receive the following sum:

ONE DAY EVENT $9,718.59

TWO DAY EVENT $19.437.18

THREE DAY EVENT $29,155.57

Our one evening, therefore benefitted our school to the tune of $9,728.59. Our thanks once again to an indefatigable volunteers without whom we would be much poorer in more ways than one.

FUND RAISING

Fund raising is an important and ongoing component of Mulgrave School: while tuition fees cover the operating costs of the school, funds to support developing programmes and capital expansion come from donations and from fund-raising events. It is understood that parents of children enrolled in Mulgrave School become members of the Mulgrave family "community", which is committed to the support of, and participation in, fund-raising activities without which we could not achieve the high standards we have set for the school.

Thank you for all the efforts, and your donations which are combining to produce a super Fall Fair # 2. Please do keep the books, bottles, clothing, 'estate shop" treasures etc. coming! If you are unable to donate, please do volunteers much time as you are able to give. We are one family, one voice and share one goal - all that we do is for our children.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Hamer
Headmistress

MEG HICKLING

The Sexual Development of Children

October 30th, 1996

7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

This is a two hour presentation for parents, teachers and others who care for children from preschool age through adolescence.

We begin by looking at the five stages of sexual development through which children grow as they come to understand sexuality in a mature way. We examine what they need to know at each stage and how to present the facts at various levels of interest and ability.

Secondly, we look at puberty changes, the early and late starters, childrensÕ worries and concerns, what is normal and ways of providing information and comfort.

Questions and concerns from those attending are welcome and handouts listing helpful books and videos will be available.

Meg Hickling (R.N.) has touched the lives of thousands in her work as a Sexual Health Educator. Her ability to convey difficult and controversial material with sensivity, gentle humour and warmth distinguishes her as a remarkable teacher and role model. Her early work became the prototype for the Provincial Life Curriculum. Her commitment to issues like violence against women and pornography is evident in her leadership of conferences (Extending Family Violence), and in her presentations to children on sexual health and sexual abuse prevention. She has voluntarily trained and inspired dozens in the field. She has addressed single mothers, immigrant women, church groups and medical conferences. Her vision and influence have contributed to a healthier local and national community.
