Dear Parents
We certainly have some "hot-shot" mathematicians within the Mulgrave family. Every time I insert a family math problem, I receive a cornucopia of correct calculations! Last week's question was the following:

Can you fill in the + and - signs between the digits so that the answer is 100?
From Mr. Vipond (Olivia G.2), the Miller family (Jonathan, G.5), Mr. Staff (Olivia, Rebecca, K Natalie, G.2), the Anthony family (Charlsey, G.5) came this solution:
123 + 45 - 67 + 8 - 9 = 100
From Mrs. Vipond came
123 - 45 - 67 + 89 = 100
From the Rayher family (Fiona, G.5) and Mr. Allard (Gage, K) and the Wierenga family (Lauren K, Jaclyn G.2)
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 - 6 - 7 + 8 + 90 + 100
From Mr. Allard (he is still working!) again and Mr. Staff again

What a wonderful response - I hope we can pass on the fascination with the marvellous mystique of maths to our children. Watch for problem # 2 next week!
YEAR BOOK
To those parents who gave up so much time and talent in the creation of an outstanding #1 Edition of Mulgrave's Year Book. We salute you! I am filled with pride and joy as I wander through a year chronicled so beautifully by Ms. D. Gibson, Ms. L. Gowan, Mr. B. Larose, Ms. H. Turner and Ms. A. Wallis and thank you for the final words of our book. I promise you that the magic will indeed continue at Mulgrave.
TERRY FOX RUN
From Ms. Straub who spent countless hours counting we learn that Mulgrave's Terry Fox Run collected $3641.01¢. Thank you to all, and a special thank you to those "running" and "organising" parents- Mrs. James (Kathleen G.2), Mrs. Clarance (Conor K, Tessa G2) Mrs. Kiloh (Allison G.3) Mrs. Smyth (Hilary G.3) Mrs. Taunton (Ashley G.5) and our CHAMPION SHORTBREAD MAKER Mrs. Neill (Fiona G.2). Forgive me if I left anyone out - well done Mulgrave!
ORIGAMI CLUB
Next Tuesday, October 1st, the Origami Club will be cancelled for one session only since we have a staff meeting on that day.

READING WORKSHOP
Fuddled by phonics? Saturated by sight words? Stupified by sounds and symbols? Fear not! Help is at hand! The primary teachers plus Mrs. Vipond and myself will present a reading workshop for all interested parents on Thursday, October 10 from 7: 00p.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m. in the Assembly Room.
I hope in the future months to arrange other relevant workshops - homework, maths etc. Ideas will be welcomed!
SCIENCE EQUIPMENT
The school has received a very generous donation of equipment for the science programme from the Mange family (Derek, G.1, Edi G.3, and Michelle G.4). They have challenged the parent body to follow suit and I enclose their letter addressed to myself. Meanwhile, Mr. Fischer, who is always a very happy man, is ecstatic!
MEG HICKLING
Session # 1 Parent Evening - October 30th
7 - 9 p.m. in the Assembly Room
Meg Hickling (R.N.) has touched the lives of thousands in her work as a Sexual Health Educator. Her ability to convey difficult and controversial material with sensivity, gentle humour and warmth distinguishes her as a remarkable teacher and role model. Her early work became the prototype for the Provincial Life Curriculum. Her commitment to issues like violence against women and pornography is evident in her leadership of conferences (Extending Family Violence), and in her presentations to children on sexual health and sexual abuse prevention. She has voluntarily trained and inspired dozens in the field. She has addressed single mothers, immigrant women, church groups and medical conferences. Her vision and influence have contributed to a healthier local and national community.

Session 2 Primary Session K - 3 plus parents Date to be arranged.
Parents and children are invited to attend a "BODY SCIENCE" session together. These sessions are designed to enhance discussion at home about how bodies work, and how to take care of the private parts.
Session 2a Intermediates and Parent Session - Grades 4 - 7
Date to be arranged
This session includes all of the above, plus a much fuller and more complete exploration of puberty changes: what is normal, what are the common questions and concerns as bodies grow and change. Good hygiene and health habits for the lifetime are emphasized.
KINDERGARTEN ASSEMBLY PRESENTATION
will be held on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3rd not on FRIDAY, October 4th. since myself and Mrs. Vipond will be in attendance at a Children's Literature Conference in Calgary.
APPOINTMENTS WITH TEACHING STAFF
If you have anything you would like to discuss with any of the faculty, please make an appointment through Mrs. Grant. Concerns (or bouquets) should initially be brought to the teachers, who consult with me thereafter. I am, of course, extremely happy to meet with you also, should the need arise. Mulgrave's teaching faculty are committed to the Triad, and to your children, as are we all. Please do not, however, telephone the teachers at home; they too need to replenish the fires of energy for the morrow, and for their families.
PARENT COUNCIL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30th - 7:30 p.m. in the Jim Graham Lounge. Please do all join us for this first important Parent Council meeting. Every family member is an invaluable component in the creation of our school - without you all, we would not be like Topsy from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" We did indeed "just grow" but unlike Topsy, we have been nurtured by each other, and will continue to do so. |
