Dear Parents

The winning team in last term's trivia competition was a combination of faculty and parents. On her mettle, readying herself for Trivia Night # 2, is Ms. Tuck, a stellar member of the afore-mentioned team. She it was, and only she, who provided the correct answer to last week's brain teaser.

Leslie Marie Kapshaw, our putative author, is an anagram of William Shakespeare, The quotation is an anagram from Hamlet's monologue in Act II

To be or not to be
whether tis nobler in the mind
To suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune .......

PARENT COUNCIL MEETING

will be on Monday, September 30, 1996 and

NOT as previously stated on Monday, September 16, 1996

PLEASE NOTE IN YOUR DIARIES AND PLAN TO ATTEND.
ALL PARENTS ARE MEMBERS OF MULGRAVE PARENT COUNCIL

TERRY FOX RUN

On Tuesday, September 17, all children should come to school dressed in their P.E. strip ready for the Terry Fox Run. The students should be wearing their track suits (shorts underneath in the event of a very hot day); they may remain in their P.E. strip for the remainder of the school day since changing 110 pupils boggles the mind! Parents are very welcome to participate in the Run: sign-up sheets are posted on the School Notice Board, as well as on the P.E. Office door. Please do remember to send in donation sheets by Tuesday morning.

CASINO NIGHT

Mrs. Agopian (Hagopik, Grade 1), Mr. Woods (George, Grade 1) to-gether with a friend, Mr. Paul Hasler, unconnected with Mulgrave (We thank Mr. Hasler for his great generosity in donating his energy and time to our school) Ms. Begg and Mr. Grikus (Sterling, Grade 3) are our trusty team for Mulgrave's Casino Night on September 21. One Casino evening can benefit our school by thousands of dollars, and we really appreciate our volunteers willingness to lose sleep in the service of Mulgrave.

BIRTHDAY INVITATIONS

If your son or daughter is planning a birthday party, PLEASE DO NOT BRING invitations to school for distribution, unless every-one in the class is invited. It is recognised that the latter is less than likely , and I am very concerned that there should be no hurt feelings, or sense of isolation, in any of the children. Exclusion is intolerably painful, especially when one is unable % to understand adult concepts of space, cost and organizational logistics. Please, therefore, post invitations, or alternatively telephone guests. These measures cannot entirely prevent hurtful situations arising: they will certainly lessen the possibilities, however.

KINDERGARTEN DISMISSAL TIME

As from Monday, September 16, the kindergarten class will be dismissed at 3:20 p.m. every day.

HOUSE TEAMS

From the speech of Farah Kassam, Grade 5 "I want to tell you why Mrs. Hamer has chosen to have houses in our school. Houses make us feel wanted and part of a group. It will also give us a reason to perform well because our group will be depending upon each other. House teams will encourage team spirit and co-operation amongst us all. We will get to know each other well, appreciate each other's strengths and learn to be more tolerant of others ......

Farah's explanation is apt, and I thank her for penning her thoughts so articulately. Our House Teams bear names taken from Nobel prize winners, people who have made a difference to the world.

in the category of peace - Martin Luther King, house colour - blue
in the category of literature - Winston Churchill - house colour - yellow
in the category of physics, Marie Curie, house colour - red
in the category of chemistry - Dr. Michael Smith (from the University of British Columbia) - House colour - green

Speakers from Grades 4 and 5 told us at last WednesdayÕs assembly why they would like to lead or help lead a house. The faculty chose collaboratively the following students;

Luther King Captain
Deputy Captain
Alexandra Chan
Fiona Rayher
Churchill Captain
Deputy Captain
Farah Kassam
Vikas Bowry
Curie Captain
Deputy Captain
Emily Gould
Nabila Pirani
Smith Captain
Deputy Captain
Charlotte Nobles
Michael Roethe

Next February, eight more leaders will be chosen, and the present Captains, to-gether with their deputies, may step down. We shall be allocating every child in the school a button ( in Grade 1,2 and up, these should be worn on the lapel of the blazer; in Kindergarten and Grade 1, on sweaters). Within the next week siblings will be in the same Houses so that family loyalties are not strained.

CAPITAL FUNDRAISING

Capital fundraising is required to provide the school with the ability to make major capital expenditures for facilities, major equipment and other similar requirements. This includes the expansion of the school to its new permanent K-12 site.

The Board is urgently seeking expressions of interest from parents who would be willing to serve on the Capital Committee, which will develop and champion the school's long term capital funding strategy. The Committee needs members who have beneficial knowledge, experience and contacts in the business, social, political and philanthropic communities. One or more members may be drawn from outside of the school parent body. Please contact Andrew Woods (980-2514) as soon as possible, if you would like to put forward your own or can suggest others who may be interested.

ART

Congratulations to Ricarda McDonald (Aurora, Grade 5) whose photograph appeared in the North Shore News this week. Ms. McDonald has been awarded an Art scholarship at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. One of her paintings is hung behind my desk.

Stuart Slind Our front foyer has been beautified by the oil and water-colour paintings of Stuart Slind. Stuart was MulgraveÕs art teacher during our 'portable' years; We are proud to have had lessons from an artist of such excellence.

Stuart continues to study art at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and at the Academy of Realist Art in Seattle. He is currently represented by t ®he Bau-Xi Gallery in Vancouver. You may have noticed that the paintings are priced: should any be sold to a Mulgrave family, the school will benefit from a commission.

SOCIAL EVENTS

I thoroughly enjoyed the Barbecue last Sunday - it was a pleasure talking with so many Mulgrave families. Our next Social event will be the Trivia Night on Friday, September 27 to be held in the Jim Graham Lounge in the North Shore Winter Club. Players may arrange themselves in named teams of four or Ms. Ferguson, the chief organiser, and myself can make up teams ourselves (since I know you trust us so well!) We will have a VAST range of categories - fear not! If you intend to participate, please complete and return the attached form as soon as possible to the office. The cost will be $8.00 each or $14.00 per couple; there will be a no host bar and stupendous prizes.

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Hamer
Headmistress
