Dear Parents

It is a genuine pleasure to see everyone again - welcome to year #4 at Mulgrave.

CASINO NIGHT

We have been scheduled to have a casino night at the Gateway Casino, (The Mandarin Centre) 611 Main Street, Vancouver, on Saturday September 21st, 1996.
We need four volunteers to start at 5 pm, two of whom must have taken the gaming commissions course. A fifth volunteer who might arrive by midnight, would speed up the closing procedures considerably. If you can be one of our stalwart volunteers, please inform the school by Monday, September 9th. I appreciate that the notice is short, but know, however, how well financially the school can benefit from such an evening.

PARKING

Concern has been expressed by B.C. Hydro and I.C.B.C., whose premises are situated immediately opposite our own. Apparently some Mulgrave families have been illegally parking outside I.C.B.C. and or B.C. Hydro, impeding the movements and progress of vehicles, which are often large trucks.

Please do not park on that side of the street; I am also concerned, as are I.C.B.C. and B.C. Hydro that a wriggling body may rush across the road needlessly and that an unnecessary accident could occur.

TERRY FOX RUN

In 1980, Terry Fox decided to run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. His journey was called the Marathon of Hope. Terry ran an average of a marathon (26 miles/43 km) every day for 143 days before he was forced to stop due to the return of cancer in his lungs. He died in 1981, and since that time, over $144 million dollars (Cdn.) has been raised worldwide through an annual non-competitive run named after Terry Fox.

Mulgrave will be supporting the run, and, as last year, we are organising our own event. Immediately after assembly on Tuesday, September 17th, all the teaching staff and the children will walk over to Bridgeman Park where Ms Straub will have marked out the area. Kindergarten children will walk a lap - Grades 1-5 will be able to run. If you would like to join us, we would welcome your participation.

I believe Terry Fox to have been a true Canadian hero and a young man who epitomized many of the virtues we espouse at Mulgrave. I appreciate your help in the creation of a giving community and good, compassionate and aware citizens at Mulgrave.

Pledge sheets are included with this newsletter. Ms Straub would greatly appreciate donations being collected and brought to school prior to our run.

We hold an assembly every morning at 830 am; Fridays, however, have an especial zing and panache, for on those days we have class presentations (as well as the merit certificate ceremony) to which you are all welcome to attend, whether or not your son or daughter is involved in that Friday's production.

Public Service Club

"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve" - Martin Luther King, Jr

Ms. Millerd and Ms. Tuck are organising an exciting new extra-curricular club for Mulgrave students, the public service club.

Open to students in grades 3, 4 and 5, with help from all students in the school, the club is based on the philosophy that all of us, no matter how young, can make significant contributions to our communities. The goals of the club are

  1. to make Mulgrave students aware of the needs of others and of our interdependence as human beings, and to fulfil the mission statement of the school as regards the compassion, public-spiritedness and ethical, responsible citizenship to which the School has committed itself

  2. to foster the attitude that what we do can make a real difference in the lives of others

  3. to instil in Mulgrave students a life-long commitment to philanthropic activities

  4. through modest fund-raising activities and in partnership with local businesses to be of material help to certain targeted agencies, notably those assisting children in need

  5. to represent Mulgrave School as a responsible, caring member of our North Shore communities

As with other Mulgrave activities, students who decide to join our club will be expected to stay with it, in this case for at least one term. The club will run for all three terms, meeting at lunch-hour once a week on average when we are involved in a project. Our activities will include some or all of the following, with other ideas to come from club members

  1. coffee and muffin sales before Friday assemblies; organising art-work for coffee mug sales

  2. correspondence with Mulgrave's foster child, 7 year-old Kweku Yaakubu of Ghana

  3. guest speakers from the parent body, friends of the School, and social service agencies describing their philanthropic activities

  4. donation of children's art-work to old age homes and hospitals

  5. food drives at Thanksgiving and Christmas for North Shore Family Services and North Shore Harvest

ADVANCE NOTICE

Performance - Wednesday October 23 "Celebrate Reading" an evening pot-pourri to accompany our week long Book Fair.
Thursday WE HOLD OUR WEEKLY STAFF MEETING ON THIS DAY. THESE BEGIN AT 345 PM. I WOULD APPRECIATE CONFERENCES OR CONVERSATIONS WITH TEACHING STAFF BEING ARRANGED AT OTHER TIMES UNLESS OF COURSE, THERE IS AN EMERGENCY.
Friday This will be CHOIR rehearsal.

TENNIS

Tennis lessons have again been offered by Mr. George Lea, the Tennis Pro of the North Shore Winter Club. - Lunch time lessons may be arranged on a daily basis (1240 - 110 pm) and on Fridays from 330 - 430 pm. The cost will be $60 for a total of 8 hours instruction, with groups in multiples of 6. These lessons would probably be most appropriate for children in Grades 2,3,4 & 5.

* PLEASE RETURN ALL CLUB FORMS BY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8. ACTIVITIES WILL BEGIN THIS COMING MONDAY. MEMBERSHIP OF CLUBS WHICH HAVE LIMITED NUMBERS WILL BE DECIDED BY MONDAY SEPTEMBER 9.

Hot Lunch Programme

This will begin on Monday, September 9. If you have not yet ordered lunches, brown bags will now have to be the order of the day since the final date for ordering hot lunches was extended to Friday, September 6. It becomes an administrative nightmare to deal with late orders, and I am afraid that this year, we require to be firm about our final date.

Before the hot lunch programme was introduced last fall, we made use of the donated microwaves in class-rooms. We are no longer able to heat up food in the class-room since this delays the general departure, as well as the start time for our many and various lunch time activities.

GRASSY AREA CLEARED BY VOLUNTEER GREEN FINGERED PARENTS!

We now have a field to play upon, thanks to the combined efforts of the Board, the City and the group of hard working parents who gave up a sunny Saturday to make the grounds ready. Thanks to you all - the children are enjoying the freedom of running and playing outside on the grass (weather permitting)

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Ms McQuaid (Natalie - Grade 2, Olivia & Rebecca - Kindergarten) has prepared an Emergency Preparedness Plan for our students, and this will be shared with you shortly.

We would appreciate receiving as soon as possible a current photograph of your son and daughter as well, your completion of the attached form.

NUT ALLERGIES

This year we have a pupil attending Ms TetikerÕs class who has a life- threatening allergy to NUTS, especially Cashew and Pistachio nuts. To ensure an environment of maximum safety, we encourage you to avoid sending your children to school with any nut or nut product.

We understand that this request may pose some inconvenience, especially as peanut butter sandwiches are quite popular. However, the potential danger to the student requires our every effort to create a safe, risk free environment. Please take the time to read the attached article to help understand our concern.

FALL FAIR

The first organizational meeting of the 1996 Fall Fair Committee will be held on Thursday, September 12, at 820 am in the cafeteria of the North Shore Winter Club.

Anyone who has the time to help us with preparations for the Fair is urged to attend. (This is a great way for new families to get to know people!)

Questions? Call Christine Reed at 988 5907
or Cathy Thompson at 929 0633
REMINDER Mark November 2nd, 1000 till 300 on your calendar. We will need your help on that day to make the Fair a SUCCESS!!

TRIVIA EVENING on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 (more information next week).

You might like to solve this brain teaser, donated by Mr. Woods (George - G.1) in preparation.

Questions? What is unusual about the following literary commentary by Leslie Marie Kaphsan;

"In one of the Bard's best thought-of tragedies, our insistent hero, Hamlet, queries on two fronts about how life turns rotten"

Good Luck!

I look forward to seeing you all at the Barbecue on Sunday.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Hamer
