Arrival, Registration and Dismissal
All students are required to attend each day the school is in session and we are obliged by law to receive a written explanation of absence from a child’s parent. If a child is sick for two or more days, a medical certificate is required. Where absence is sought for reasons other than illness, please contact the child’s teacher for permission. Vacations taken during the school year are discouraged, since these tend to impede or delay the child’s progress. As well, please note that we receive an annual grant per student provided that he or she has been in attendance at the school for 135 days by May 15. If this is not the case, we lose a percentage of the government grant. We recoup this loss by charging the family in question except of course, when the absence is due to illness.
Students are required to be in their homerooms for registration by 8:00 am.
Lateness is both discourteous and disrespectful and we would appreciate your support in ensuring the children come to school on time. Homeroom teachers are responsible for taking attendance, for recording absence, following it up, and retaining written explanations of absence.
Any student who leaves the school before normal dismissal time must sign out at reception. Should he or she return before school ends, sign-in by a parent must be completed. This is a very important safety measure - in case of fire , we do not want to incur the possibility of people putting themselves in danger whilst searching for children who are not in school, having left without signing out.
Behaviour
Our expectations of high academic performance and conduct are clearly set out, and explained to our students. Mulgrave students are expected to be hard-working, responsible in attitude and to strive for inner discipline. As members of a community, we are interdependent upon one another. Fundamental elements for harmony and success are as follows:
Uniform and Appearance
Students are required to attend correctly dressed in the school uniform, and are not permitted to attend if incorrectly dressed. If there is a valid reason for the child not to be wearing school uniform (Brownie or Beaver ceremony, for example) please write a note to the child’s teacher in explanation.
All students should be clean and well groomed. Uniform should be worn with pride and respect. It is to be worn both at school, and as well, en route to and from school.
Mulgrave School uniform excludes the wearing of jewellery with the exception of school pins. Simple gold keeper stud earrings are permissible for girls.

All items should be clearly marked with the student’s name, and name checks will be a regular part of school life. It would also be helpful if name tags were visible on the outside of gym bags and pack sacks.
